Gate1.aheadhq.com is my Gateway(symantec firewall) to my networks.

Browse All TopicsWithin the last 2 weeks i have noticed more and more of this error message:
451 4.4.1 timeout writing message to gate1.aheadhq.com.: Broken pipe
I have a Symantec firewall that points all smtp traffic to my Barracuda Spam Firewall, which in turn relays good email to exchange.
Outbound email goes directly out thru the symantec firewall.
Does anyone know what this Broken Pipe error is? or what may be causing it??
I have been googling the hell out of it, and all i can find is sendmail writeups, nothing about exchange or outlook.
Please help, I need some solid advise as to what may be happening here.

If it is inbound then the problem is occurring before the message hits Exchange. If the error is being reported by the appliance then that is where you need to look. Have you spoken to support of the appliance to see what they have to say about the error? It isn't an Exchange error, so it is being generated elsewhere.

I don't think the problem is SMTP timeouts. 5.5 minutes would seem fine, maybe a little long if anything. Given the information you have posted, the error is not with Exchange, it is somewhere between the two appliances. You will need to speak to their support to see what diagnostics can be done at both ends. It could be something as simple as a suspect network cable.

You need to be talking to Barracuda. Since this is inbound, the connection is passed through the firewall into the Barracuda. It does it's thing and passes the mail along to Exchange.
You didn't say where you are seeing the 441 (it would have to be from a sending client) but RFC-2821 defines general error 451 as: 451 Requested action aborted: error in processing
With the more specific 4.4.1 as 4yz Transient Negative Completion reply
The command was not accepted, and the requested action did not
occur. However, the error condition is temporary and the action
may be requested again. The sender should return to the beginning
of the command sequence (if any). (NB: x.4.1 is not defined).
Thus the Barracuda is broken; it's supposed to be a transient error but clearly isn't meaning it's fallen and can't get up. Certainly nothing to do with Exhange though.

The fact that you pass all of your email to another appliance is the reason why you aren't seeing anything about this error from Exchange. It isn't an Exchange message. The message has left Exchange and is trying to be delivered by your appliance. You need to speak to support for the appliance for what the message means. My instinct is that there is a problem with your internet connection.
What is gate1.aheadhq.com? Is that your server, something else?
