When someone send an email, in the queue viewer you can see it become active and it show up which server it is connecting to e.g. yahoo. But showing number of message and size "0".

If the queue viewer shows no messages, then they are not stuck in Exchange.
Do you have message tracking enabled? If not, then enable it. If you do, query the logs using the Message Tracking Center and see what Exchange is doing with the messages.
If they are stopping at the categoriser then AV or Antispam is the cause. I have seen both GFI and McAfee Group Shield quarantine everything in the past.

When I did tracking and track the missing message, the last thing is shows is "Message transferred to through SMTP" (See attachment), But nothing showing in queue.

The problems of stuck emails came to light because recently I rebooted the server and it sent loads (or generate NDR) of emails that must have been stuck in the server.

More info regarding my set up: This server was migrated to Windows 2003 SBS from WIndows 2000 server, with exchange 2000 using SWING migration.

When I was using exchange 2000, I remember when sending emails (say large one), I normally see queues of emails waiting to be sent or are sending but at the moment queues always empty.

Any ideas what wrong?

Message tracking only shows you what the remote server has in its SMTP banner.
If the banner had been set to bugsbunny then the line would say

Message transferred to bugsbunny through SMTP.
Therefore the remote server has a blank banner. Not unusual.
However given the message tracking result, that particular message I would say was delivered, because it hasn't stopped in message tracking. If the message was stuck the last line would be something like Message Submitted To Categoriser.

Messages being released after a reboot is a little more common. There are a number of reasons for that.
AV scanning directories it shouldn't be is the major one.
There is also a bug in Exchange called the Greylisting bug which is fixed by a Hotfix from Microsoft: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/950757/

It very much depends what the NDrs say that are returned when the server is rebooted.

Dear Mestha,

Thanks for your feedback!

It seems I can see emails in the queue viewer now. (1 email waiting for retry)

I tried installing the hotfix as I do noticed that some of the bounced emails were greylisted.

But after the hotfix I noticed another problem that is caused by the hotfix.
When dismount and remount the email database, the email that is waiting for retry seem to get duplicated, but without the sender and subject info. Any suggestions to fix this?

Thanks for your time,

Philip

I am not aware of any side effects with the hot fix, and have it deployed on every Exchange 2003 server I have deployed and/or manage. Therefore it goes back to one of my original points - an AV application application scanning something it shouldn't do.
