Email not being re-queued after SMTP transaction error

Hi Experts,

I noticed on Friday when looking through our SMTP transaction logs to track some missing email that our email server does not seem to re-queue emails if there is a problem during the SMTP transaction process.

In the particular example I identified on Friday our mail server was trying to send to a mail server with an anti-spam process which always denies the first attempt to send a mail.

After my server has issued the RCTP TO command the remote server issues a '451+GL+-+temporary+problem.+Please+try+again+later'  command.

My server then issues the RSET command and the process seems to close successfully but the email is no longer in my SMTP queue.

I've attached the entire SMTP log for one of the transactions in question.

My Exchange server is 2003 SP2 running on a Server 2003 SP2 platform. I only have the one Exchange server. It connects directly (via L2 switches) to our only gateway which is a Watchguard X700 firewall.

Can someone help me work out why this is happening?
