Question

Asked by: fiona

I have an IDE Quantum LM 20GB hard drive I would like to mount on my system with 2 scsi drives.
The bios looks fot the IDE drive first. I still want to boot from SCSI.  Is there any way around this?
Explain dma cabling for this drive?
Also, how to mirror 2 of these IDE drives together?

You can only boot from the SCSI first if the BIOS supports this. Check your BIOS--somewhere there should be something called Boot Sequence, which is usually set to something like A,C. If you make sure this says SCSI somewhere, the BIOS will check the SCSI when it finds the C drive is not bootable and should then boot fine.

Dunno what you mean by "DMA cabling".

You can software mirror two IDE drives in NT by setting them up as a mirror set, but then Win98 wouldn't recognise them. The only way both OSes will recognise is to use a hardware IDE mirroring solution like the Promise FasTrak IDE RAID controller.

Hi fiona

With the NT-Loader (or any other Boot-Loader) on the first Partition of Your IDE-Drive it is possible to select what partition You want to boot from. This way it doesn't matter on which drive the Partition with the System is. How do you select 98/NT at your current configuration ?

DMA cabling means that You should use a special IDE-Cable for Your new IDE-Drive. Old IDE (or ATA) Drives used a 40-wire cable (low speed). Today, to use UDMA33/66 (high transmission rate)it is necessary to use a special cable built for UDMA33/66. Watch out, both systems use the same connectors but not the same cable.

Mirror: pjknibbs is right. But there are Mirror-Solutions in hardware for IDE also. If you don't want mind about Mirroring chose a Hardware-Solution (plug and forget).

If your bios does not have the SCSI option like pjknibbs mentioned, you are stuck with booting off of the IDE drive. There is no other work around for this. It has to do with your bios. See if you can get a bios flash upgrade and hope that it has SCSI boot up support.

Where is the Problem ?

1. Make a bootable and active Partition on the IDE-Drive.
2. Install on that the boot loader .
3. Configure the boot loader for the Partitions on IDE and SCSI.

Boot-up follows then like that:
1. System boots from IDE
2. Fiona chooses what partition to boot from
3. voilà

alesch: She specifically said she wanted to boot from SCSI. Using your system she's actually booting from IDE, and the NT boot loader is then transferring control to the SCSI hard disk.
