Difficult circular reference problem

I've inherited quite a detailed Excel 2000 spreadsheet. When I open it I get the message "Microsoft Excel cannot calculate a formula. There is a circular reference in an open workbook, but the references that cause it cannot be listed for you. Try editing the last formula you entered or removing it with the Undo command (Edit menu)."

Unfortunately, the circular reference toolbar is of little use, as it can't locate the offending cell(s).

Any ideas?
