The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Losing focus on apps in taskbar

Asked by kcs_tec in Miscellaneous Software

Hi all,

Having a strange problem with Windows 2000 (SP2), problem
seemed to start about 4 months ago and haven't had time
since then to figure out how to fix.

- Basically I have X number of applications all loaded at once
and they all appear on the windows taskbar at the bottom.
(usually between 6 and 9 apps at once)

- Often when I click on one of the apps to change focus
to it and bring it to the foreground, the entry in the taskbar
just flashes and the app doesnt pop up or get the focus.

- If I click 3 or 4 times then the app will finally appear
as normal. The problem is intermittent but seems to get
worse as time goes by until it happens very frequently.

- The problem seems worst when changing focus to IE5.5
but it happens to all the apps at one time or another
(Winamp, explorer, outlook, notepad etc..)

- About TSR's... task manager reports:

svchost (multiple instances)
smss
crss
winlogon
services
lsass
spoolsv
ezengine (proxy server for internet conn sharing)
nvsvc32 (Geforce4200 video card)
winmgmt
explorer
rundll32
taskmgr
mapisp32

+various applications as listed above.

Anyone know if this is a microsoft bug, or an incorrect
setting in my registry or one of the above TSR's/apps
causing the erratic behaviour...?

I know this problem sounds minor but I'm giving it
250 points cos it's driving me round the bend having
windows not getting focus properly when I want them
too!!

Also sometimes I open up an app for the first time and
it will immediately lose focus after loading up (very
annoying if the app brings up a dialog box which
promptly loses focus just as you start typing in the
password/data into it!

Help is really appreciated. Cheers everyone..
