Musicman, thanks but how I can know if my VCD player plays the MPEG2 format as it it is not mentioned in the manual.. also if I have some CD Movies from magazines, how can I know if this can be played on my VCD, I can see the content of the Cd on my computer, I mean is there is a specific structure for the directories in the CD..
Thanks a lot

If you convert the files on your computer to VCD format then burn them onto a disc, your VCD player will be able to play them back.
VCD players will support the following formats:

VCD, CD-G, CD
There are a few on the market that will also support DVD.

The easiest way to find out if your movies from magazines will play is to put them in the machine and see what happens, you will not harm the player by putting an unrecognised format disc in it.

Hey driller19,

Try www.vcdhelp.com.  That's where I got all my questions answered about ... well ... vcds!!

Currently I use TMPGEnc to convert divx to MPEG ... which can be viewed on your vcd player.
I use Nero Burning Rom to burn it into a VCD.

Usually you know it's a vcd when it has about 5 directories (sorry I don't have a vcd nearby me now) and one of the directories is MPEGAV

Hope that helps.

You already have all the links you need for conversion to the MPEG format.  Once you have the file ready use your CD burning software to create the VCD structure for you (It'll need about 30MB so make sure your MPEG file will still fit on the disk!).  I use Nero for this & it does it without you having to worry about the directory structure for VCD.  I'm sure most other CD burning packages will do the same.

Hello Musicman,
i professionally do video conversion for my clients.

step 1) know your video files
VCD format supports mpg1 files only that to it is very specific, for pal (352pixelwidth x 288pixelheight at 25 frames per second constant bitrate 1150kbps) for ntsc(352x288 at30fps)

avi. avi file you have got may be downloaded or divx or rendered, and is not vcd compatible neets to be encoded

mpg. maybe mpg1 or mpg2 bitrate maybe variable or constant, needs to be checked before writing

dat. dat file you got is most probably from a track you got from vcd, it is a mpg1 vcd format file but its fileinfo(that makes it a true mpg is truncated. sometimes may work sometimes maynot.

vcd structure
vcd folder structure is not plain directory structure, when vcd format was concieved the chip and program were not so sophisticated, they put every info on different tracks(based on audio cd track concept)

bad news
you need some authoring package to create VCD, good news you probably already have it, if you own a CD writer. Nero, winoncd, easycd creator, vcdeasy all have vcd authoring capability.

vcd conversion
in nero, select file->new, choose VideoCD, choose PAL or NTSC encoding,  click new. then it is a matter of drag and drop of true mpg1 files and burn your cd, you VCD is ready.

Menu
if you  want menu, looping, stills etc you may need to get professional softwares plus read more info about the VCD standard documentation.

Video encoding
there are lots of commerical encoder available, but there exist a fast and good encoding resolution encoder which has a free version is Tsunami Mpeg enoder now known as TMPGEnc( http://www.pegasys-inc.com/ ). it can convert all avi, sequencial iamges(if you use rendering), quicktime, mpg(1 and 2). it can correct dat to mpg. you can find a freeware tool dat2mpg on http://www.google.com to do the same work

special info about avi(downloaded avi's not playing on your pc). there exist compressed avi files which require special software called codecs to be installed on your system to it to be played or encoding, example divx, cinepak etc. good news if you created it on your pc or if you can play it on windows media player you  have the codecs.

Cd special info. do not write on CDRW, most VCD players  dont read CDRW

Ok goof friends, but how I know that I'm recording either Mpg1 or mpg2, I'm using Nero that comes with my writer and suppose that my VCD player supports only MPG1.. also can I convert from MPG2 to MPG1 if i have MPG2 file that I want to play on my VCD..
Thanks

Most apps including TMPGEnc will tell you what format your video file is & can then convert it for you MPEG2 - MPEG1 included.

Nero will just burn the video file into the VCD format.  You need to check the format of the file is correct before burning.

Hey driller19,

MPEG2 is for SVCD and MPEG1 is for VCD.  (Please correct me if I'm wrong ... haven't done this in over a year)
Nero will alert you if the formats are incorrect.  For instance, if you decide to create a VCD and you dragged and dropped a MPEG2 into the folder than after it has scanned the file it will warn you that the frequency, dimensions of the video are incorrect.

It's a very simple process - once you do it you won't forget:
1) Use TMPGEnc and convert the format to MPEG1
2) Use Nero and choose to create a VCD
3) Drag and drop the appropriate files
4) Burn

You'll know when something is wrong (and the blank cd will be saved!)

Hope that helps.

What if you have Easy CD Creator and the cd-rom drive will not read the disk any longer? I have an original disk that loads, appears to begin reading, then just spins forever w/o reading disk data?

Also, I have HP cd-writer dvd combo 9900 [reads dvd's, does not record them]. From menu options, cannot determine how to convert or create vcd or make disk using mpeg files that will ultimately read on a home theater dvd player system.
