My Internet explorer sapping over 98% of Computer resources thus locking up!! Please help!! All my points 4 u!

Ok here is the deal I start my computer it goes through xp then I get to my desktop and my start up programs begin to freeze. I can move my mouse but can get access to nothing but the taskmanager via ctrl -alt-del mehtod. Once in there I notice that explorer.exe is using 98% of system resources and the other 2% to taskmanger rest of my programs have nothing. Hence, I cannot open anything. What I did try was running program from the taskmanger and tryed to delete ie from there and then instal netscape as my default. However, xp wont let me delete internet explorer. I have no idea why Ie is sapping my resources but I sure would like some help. This shouldnt be to difficult for the right person and all my point for the right answer. thanks
