Question

Internet Explorer hangs for 10 seconds

Asked by: howei

Since few days earlier my Internet Explorer 6.0 started to hang for about 10 seconds when I click on any Internet link and only after it pauses like that it continues to display the web site as normal. This is very annoying.

Any idea why it would do this?

Greetings, howei!

What Operating system?  If Windows XP,

1. There may be programs running in the background interfering with the operation of Internet Explorer. If you have Norton programs running in the background, temporarily turn them off, including anti-virus, win doctor, recycle bin protect, and clean sweep. Does this fix the problem?

Turn off any firewall or ad-blocker.

2. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer.

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;318378
OR
http://www.theeldergeek.com/repair_ie6.htm

If Windows 98 or ME,

3. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer. From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes up, select Repair. Click OK.

You can also access the IE Toolbar by clicking Start > Run and type

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance "C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer\Setup\SETUP.EXE" /g "C:\WINDOWS\IE Uninstall Log.Txt"

4. Use IE Eradicator to delete Internet Explorer.

http://www.litepc.com/ieradicator.html

Make sure you have downloaded the IE6 setup files first, but not loaded. Backup your Favorites folder.

Best wishes, war1

I think War1 is on the right track.  Sounds like some type of 3rd party interference with IE 6.

What Operating System are you running?

If WinXp, try this:

go to start, run, type in msconfig, hit ok.  Then click the services tab and put a checkmark in "hide all microsoft services", then uncheck what's left in that window.  Then click the startup tab and uncheck everything here.  Click apply, close, and restart.

Once rebooted, see if IE's performance is any better.

If that (msconfig) does help, then you must selectively go through the non-microsoft services and startup items to determine which is causing the problem.  I'd suggest rechecking all of the services first, reboot, then see if the problem occurs.  If it does occur, then you know it's in the services.  If it does not occur, then you know it's in the startup.  Then selectively go through that to narrow it down to the actual offending service/startup item.

The above steps also work on win98 and winme, just the services tab is not there, so you would just do the startup items.

Do you by chance have ESPN Motion installed?

Hope this helps.

Mark

This is Win Xp and Win 2000 behind the same switch.  Both machines are showing similar delay. I checked switch duplex, but it is OK = 100 full. I see delay only when using IE not on the local network.
Run Ad Aware and SpyBoot=it did not help. About week ago I installed key logger utility and a few Windows updates..that is all I can remember. No ESPN Motion.

When I click on hyperlink nothing happens. I feel like a timer is holding IE for 10 sec. and than it goes to retrieve the page. I do experience unusually slow download speeds too.
I’ll continue with your suggestions one by one. You guys are great!!!

Hmmm - that changes things totally - we are good, but only go on the info we are given....

there are 2 PC's - that changes it totally...

lots of questions - to give us a good chance

what sort of internet connection do you use? DSL? dial up?
make and model of router
is TCP/IP the only protocol?
is DHCP in use or are there fixed IP's
in a process  / application window (CTRL-ALT-DEL), is there anything that you don't recognise?
do you or did you use internet connection sharing
how many network cards are in each PC? - have they been changed?

Try this - when you first open IE, make sure you enter the URL using http:// before the address. I have the same issue, where IE hangs for about 10 seconds on the first URL I enter, but if I use http:// before the address, it doesn't do it. In my case, and probably yours, I don't think it has anything to do with spyware... I'll post again if I get more info.

Download SPYBOT Search & Destroy immediately!  It sounds as if you are picking up a LOT of bots or potential trojans.
It can be found at :
http://www.safer-networking.org/index.php?page=spybotsd

SPYBOT will remove all of the hijackers, but does not address TROJANS.  There are several good Trjoan removers out there (I have not found any free, however).  Try looking at:

http://www.simplysup.com/tremover/download.html

http://www.anti-trojan-software-reviews.com/

Hope this helps.  Good luck!

I had this same problem and it was driving me crazy.  I tried everything short of reinstalling windows.

Here is what worked for me:

First in tools - internet options - advanced under browsing uncheck "enable third party browser extensions.  You will need to restart Internet explorer.  If this works for you then some third party program is slowing down internet explorer.  Then get browser sentinel http://www.browsertools.net/ it is a pretty useful tool to keep your browser running without getting bogged down by spyware

Hope this helps you,

Deb
