Question

Disable F1 Key in Internet Explorer

Asked by: gregca80

Hi:

I need to disable the F1 key in Internet Explorer. I would rather do it through the registry. I don't want to install any third party apps. Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Pull the F1 key off the keyboard.  Or tape something over the key so you cant press it.  :)

Alternatively  you could remap the key in this registry location:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Keyboard Layout

I know you didn't want third party software but all this does is convert the remapping instruction into a registry change which can apply and then remove the app.

Otherwise you may have to progam a keyboard hook interrupt

Or - laterally thinking - just diasble the functions associted with F1 using a group security setting.

I can get to that registry location, but I still need know what to add or change for the registry location.

Third Party software isn't an option, because it's part of a secure network which I can't throw any app on.

I wouldn't mind disabling the function either, if you state which setting I need to change.

Thanks

Can empathise with the secure network issue.  You should be able to run KeyTweak on a separate standalone NT/XP machine, set the disable, check it's working correctly and then simply copy the changes to the registry key to your network machine.  Try it on a "safe" machine & LMK how you get on, the documentation is a bit sparse but the interface is pretty straightforward.  All it really does is change the way the keyboard scancode is handled.

do you have more detailed information on the other options you mentioned? Or aren't really sure about that?

I can *probably* take you through the keyboard interrupt but the last time I used this was in Windows 3.x & yes although Group policy may help I hadn't really thought that one through!!
Typing faster that thinking - again :)

For info KeyTweak's registry settings can be exported from a standalone machine onto a networked machine (with local admin rights) and used to remap or disable keystrokes.
