Question

Folder pop up on Windows Startup

Asked by: SoGRida

Alright, I think this one is quite an easy one but I just can't find the trick to do this. You see, I use an ATI graphics card and when I install/update my graphics driver I usually don't use the option "Restart My Computer Now". But after the last time i updated my graphics card driver and chose the option to restart the PC right away the same folder comes popping up everytime i start windows (C:\Program Files\ATI\). It's well annoying and I can't find it in my regedit, startup, msconfig. I used HiJack This! but i couldnt find it as well. Tell me how to get rid of this bug please. If you want a screenshot here is a link (JPEG 70kb):

dont look for a specific folder that does the popup but look for a specific program windows tries to load. if it doesnt load the right program it will popup just the folder. go into regedit, msconfig again and look around again for files that arent even in the folder that windows is trying to load

also when you check the registy check both local and user settings under the run and make sure files that are being loaded are in the directory and if windows is trying to load files not even in the folder.

:) tell me how it goes

Hi SoGRida,
here's from a majorgeeks forum thread: http://forums.majorgeeks.com/archive/index.php/t-11309.html
"I started by turning off my Norton internet security, and reboot, but still had the problem. I then disabled Norton system works and rebooted. I then un-installed both of these programs. I still had the problem. I then went to that first folder that opened. "ATI support", it contained ATI control panel, which I had installed recently while updating my ATI card drivers. (this was in my H:\drive). I went to Add & Remove Programs and removed it. I re-booted and Guala !!! No open folders. and my ATI all in wonder 7500 still works, even get TV"

Sorry for taking so long on getting back on the questions. I found the answer to my problem on the link that amirinamdar gave above. There was a lot to go through but the solution was very simple much to my surprise.

There was a guy who said that people with my problem need quotes around the program path that's related to the problem. And people with ATI Graphics cards who are having C:\Program Files\ATI folder popping up should put quotes around the registry value under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > Software > Microsoft > Windows > Currentversion > Run > ATIPTAXX. which is the ATI Control panel. Oddly enough the ATI Control Panel's path was C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\ not C:\Program Files\ATI\. BUT That definetely solved the problem. So credit goes to amirinamdar who found the thread. Thank you all for participating.

I'm sorry i may have not described the solution very well, cuz i got confused after reading the above post myself :P. For people with same problems open Regedit (Start > Run > type "Regedit" and OK) and then go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE > SOFTWARE > Microsoft > Windows > CurrentVersion > Run

There supposed to be a value named ATIPTA and you should Right-Click on it, choose Modify and put quotes around C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe. So it should look like this:

ATIPTA         |      REG_SZ          |  "C:\Program Files\ATI Technologies\ATI Control Panel\atiptaxx.exe"
