Browse All TopicsHi,
i installed the game LOTR - Battle for Middle Earth today and things went wrong...
When i start the game, the splash screen pops up, in tasklist i see that some tmp file is created and game.dat is loaded. All fine till then i guess...
However, after a while (when normally the game would switch to full screen mode), my computer just RESTARTS!! You can imagine this is a quite annoying thing to happen...
To make things even worse: I CAN run Batlle for Middle Earth at home (on my other PC). This PC is a 800 MHz PIII, Win XP, 256 MB RAM, ATI Rage Fury (thus: ancient). Of course, i only can run it in lowest detail mode, and it just doesn't run smoothly...
The PC I really want to run BfME on is a 1.6 GHz PIV, Win XP Pro, 512 MB RAM, ATI Radeon 9250 (128 MB DDR). But this PC gives the above mentioned problems.
If you want i can post the numerous crashdumps i get when my PC restarts after the crash (i get about 5 each time).
I have reinstalled the drivers for the display adapter, uninstalled and reinstalled BfME and even replaced the ATI Radeon with an old 32 MB Geforce MX card. Nothing worked.
Maybe it's something to do with the sound card (sound blaster 5.1)?
Does anyone have these problems too? And is there any solution?
I really hope you can help me get under way!

Maybe i'll clearly state my specs first :-)
Windows XP Pro
Intel Pentium 4 1.6 GHz
512 MB SDRAM
+80 GB HD Space (15 GB on C:\)
8x DVD RW
DirectX 9.0c
ATI Driver is updated to the latest Catalyst.
I've debugged the dmp file and it's complaining that vsdatant.sys is the problem. I'm now updating my symbols and will get back when that's done...
PS.: is it true that vsdatant.sys is a file from ZoneAlarm??
Usually the developpers will bring out a patch. Have a peak at tehir websiet to see if it's there already. (I hope you bought the game cos else a patch will prolly not work)
To stop it in the meanwhile set it to a lower resolution. And see if that solves it. There's usually an executable in the dir the game is in called setup or something... set it in there.
The problem has been solved:
yesterday i uninstalled Zonealarm, and everything went fine except that Windows is still showing the some error when it restarts. I can't open it in WinDbg as it seems to be corrupted so i don't know what it's about...
I'm now installing another firewall instead of Zonealarm, hoping that this will solve the problems...

First of all: i'm sorry that it took me so long to answer... I had a very busy week...
Second: BoME now functions correctly. I haven't found any patches for it, but to be quite frank i haven't searched a lot. I decided to remove ZoneAlarm as i gave me other problems as well. Now i'm running Kerio Personal Firewall, which seems to do the job just fine...
I couldn't get rid of the system error i was talking about. However, it seems to be disappearing by itself, as it just pops up occasionally instead of every time i start the PC.
Conclusion:
the problem lay with ZoneAlarm's vsdatant.sys, which i could remove and unregister using the normal deinstallation procedure of ZoneAlarm.
As Masqueraid had confirmed my suspicions, i'm glad to grant him his points.
Thanks a lot for all your inputs!

Well the minimum spec should be any 32Mb Direct3D Video Card
m/drivers/ /driver.ht ml
But also
Windows 2000/XP
Intel Pentium 4/AMD Athlon 1.3GHz
256Mb RAM
3.5Gb HD Space
8x DVD-Rom
DirectX9.0b Compatible Sound Card
Things to check out first:
DirectX (Try DXDIAG.EXE & check everything is supported with no errors)
Soundcard - latest drivers? http://www.soundblaster.co
Also check the ATI drivers http://www.ati.com/support
