Question

DVD Encoding Software - Best One?

Asked by: nikolailazarev

Hi,

I am using SONY VAIO LAPTOP, PENT 4, WIDESCREEN X-BLACK, WIN XP, SP2, graphics card: MOBILITY RADEON 9700. I would like to find the best software available to be able to 1). RIP (inc. PROTECTED) DVDs onto my HARDDRIVE and 2). Covert the RIPPED DVD contents into DIVX (MPG4) files (preferably where I can specify the size of the output file, for eg. like in AutoGK) for either storing them on my hard drive or for burning on 750mb CDs. I will need to burn quite a few DVDs so the more automated the process is the better. It is better if the program allows to rip-and-covert (to a specified file size/format) on-the-fly, or at least has an option of doing it on-the-fly.

It doesn't matter if the program is free or costs >$500 - what I need is reliability, ease of operation, user-friendly interface with lots of options preferably where I can allow for WIDESCREEN SUPPORT.
I'm currently using two progs: DVD Encrypter and AutoGK - they seem fine but the first one does not support widescreen and the second one has a slightly strange way of encoding whereby it activates ancillary programs such as Virtual Dub Mode. There must be better progs out there which allow for a better quality encode and are less "raw".

Someone recommened to download some applications from divx.com but I'm concerned the progs there may not deliver as they look at bit "beta".
So I'm turning to the experts to get the best advice. NB: I am not looking for a soft to CREATE DVDs, but rather to RIP them, I hope this is clear ;-).

thanks for your help!

Nik

DVDdecrypter for decrypting the dvd's
Nero Recode to recode em..

Brillaint combo and gives great results!
Nero recode is created by the same bloke that wrote dvdshrink if I am not mistaken.

Nero recode isn't freeware though.

Further elaboration

Nero Recode will not rip copyright protected DVD's. Hence use DVDdecrypter first :)

Where do you get nero recode from ?

Hi

I have two questions as far as DVD Decrypter is concerned.
What is the difference between FILE MODE, ISO and IFO for burning? As for NERO can I just use the standard method for  recording DVDs in Nero? will the same result be achieved or is nero recode a special soft that does not come with the package?
Also I have a widescreen laptop, but when i rip DVD with the above prog the films come out only on 3/4 of my screen. In other words it does not seem to supprt widescreen - anyone has any suggestion how to make it support it?

http://www.videohelp.com/tools?s=30#30

Take your pick, FairUse is popular and free but GK is pretty good. Widescreen support depends on

a) the DVD video file itself (its DAR..eg 4:3 or 16:9 enhanced)

b) cropping the borders (to get the AR).

c) ONLY videos that match your screens AR (4:3, or 16:9 in your case) will 'FILL' the screen unless you strecth them out of AR.
