The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Mozilla Firefox opening automatically (irregular intervals)

Asked by key134 in Miscellaneous Software

Tags: automatically, firefox, opening

I work at my University's IT Service and Repair and a student brought in a Windows ME computer that had multiple viruses and spyware/adware on it.  This is nothing new.  The second problem was that Mozilla Firefox was opening automatically when the computer was idle (ok, sometimes when it is idle, it just did it while I was working on it).  If she left it on, there could possibly be 6 windows open after 1 hour.  On the other hand, there may only be 1 window open after a 1/2 hour.

After all our scans (mcafee, ad-aware, spybot, hijackthis) there seems to be nothing else on it.  Hijackthis, for example, shows only 4 items TOTAL.  I know what all 4 are.  I have disabled (now deleted) all the scheduled tasks so that shouldn't be the culprit either.  There was one task that was set to run every 10 minutes, 24 hours a day.  One would think that disabling it would fix the problem.

A little more detail on Firefox opening: it does not open to an advertisment.  I have watched it open, it says "Looking up %1..." on the status bar.  That seems to time out and it goes to the mozilla.org Firefox page.  I know that %1 is used in bookmark keywords.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance, Keith.
