Question
Excel hangs after launching it.
Have a strange on here. OS is XP pro sp2, office 2003 current service packs and update.
When I launch Excel it begins to open and then just hangs there like it's about to open for a minute or two. then it finally opens. I've run scandisk, rebooted, repaired office, etc. same problem.
now it's doing the same thing with Power point.
any ideas on how to fix this?

Seems that your profile has been corrupted for excel. You log out of the system and login with some other user account. Try opening Excel now. If it works then you will have to play around with your profile. by renaming your profile so that when you login a new profile will be created. later on you can copy your desktop, my documents etc from your old profile to your new profile.

You got it. it's definitely the profile. i logged on under a different profile and didn't have the problem. Here's what i need to know now, is there a way to retain the settings in the currently corrupted profile while making a new one? I mean the user has pst files mapped in outlook etc. I didn't want to have to redo all that again. is there any way to retain those settings?
i'll give you the points. Let me know how to get the user a new profile as easily as possible.

You can perform a system restore to resolve the issue. You can perform the following steps:
1. Log on to Windows as Administrator.
2. Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click System Restore. System Restore starts.
3. On the Welcome to System Restore page, click Restore my computer to an earlier time (if it is not already selected), and then click Next.
4. On the Select a Restore Point page, click the most recent system checkpoint in the On this list, click a restore point list, and then click Next. A System Restore message may appear that lists configuration changes that System Restore will make. Click OK.
5. On the Confirm Restore Point Selection page, click Next. System Restore restores the previous Windows XP configuration, and then restarts the computer.
6. Log on to the computer as Administrator. The System Restore Restoration Complete page appears.
7. Click OK.
Start the System Restore tool at a command prompt:
1. Restart your computer, and then press F8 during the initial startup to start your computer in Safe Mode with a command prompt.
2. Log on to your computer with an administrator account or with an account that has administrator credentials.
3. Type the following command at a command prompt, and then press ENTER:
C:\windows\system32\restor
4. Follow the instructions that appear on the screen to restore your computer to an earlier state.
Lakefront, regarding to what you were talking and zulfilbr about.
retain the settings of the corrupt profile wont be easy as long as the old profile is corrupted, first you'll have to try and fix the corrupted profile using any fixing tool, then you can easily retain the old settings for the new profile.

Have you checked for viruses. Run a Symantec Security Check from there website. This will also check for malware etc.
If no viruses are present, just reinstall Office.
