Question

Microsoft Office 2003 issue

Asked by: regsamp

A user has Microsoft Office 2003 and her Word or Excel program applications will crash at least once a day and in Event Viewer there are messages saying faulting application excel.exe, faulting module mso.dll with event ID 1000 and hanging applicaiton winword.exe with event id 1002.  The system is brand new and has been scaned for virus instances and spam.  The office suite has been uninstalled and reinstalled and repaired but they are still getting these crashes at least once a day.  Any assitance offered would be greatly appreciated.

Run Office Update from http://office.microsoft.com/en-gb/officeupdate/default.aspx (Check for updates link) and install the Service Pack + Security updates.

It may be the problem is fixed in the Service Pack.

You have to narrow down the scope for error here.

First of all, are your profiles roaming?

If so, then have your user log onto another computer and use that for a day, to see if the problem still occurs.

If not, then create a new profile on the system for her, and try that.

If the problems still occur with the new profile on the existing system, then you have a faulty installation of either Office 2003 or windows. If the problems are only profile related, then simply delete and recreate a new profile.

I had a similar problem, and ended up reinstalling windows (for another reason), which solved my problems.

Ram came back okay.  I will try the profile and then might just format the whole machine and try a new install if it is still having issues.

Few things to try first with this error:

- Try giving the user admin on the machine for the day, see if the error is generated.
- It could also be related to antivirus scanner you use, try uninstalling the virus software temporaly to see if its related.
- Do you use any Visioneer printers/scanners?
- Do you use any any 3rd party plugin to office? Check Tools -> Options -> Other Tab -> Advanced Options -> Add Ins

The problem has not happened after uninstalling and reinstalling the virus protection software so this may be closed.
