Look in the task manager. When you look in the processes tab make sure to check the box to show processes from all users. Look for wfxctl32.exe and wfxmod32.exe. You might also check to make sure fast switching isn't enabled and that you don't have more than one user logged in.
I used to run WinFax Pro 10.02 on W2k but when I upgraded to XP pro I couldn't get it to work. I recently checked around online and found that WinFax doesn't like XP and although a few claim they got it to work it was only becasue the UPGRADED from a previous OS with it installed. After much trying I determined it was impossible. I had an error similar to yours except I thin it was insisting that there was a pervious installation instead.

is the winfax program stored on your computer or on a server? there might be problems such as described if its on a server.
also try a re-installation of winfax (dont forget to backup)
..i dont know much on winfax, try calling up tech support if possible
