Main Topics
Browse All TopicsI have a small home network and am interested in using an MSN Messenger-type application over the lan directly to allow full-duplex video chat between computers (high-quality feed, as the lan is gigabyte ethernet and the necessary bandwith is available) . In fact, Messenger would be perfect for this need. However, I understand that it cannot be configured to operate p2p, and must be used over the net.
I haven't been able to find a similiar app. P2p instant messaging software generally doesn't include a proper video chat function, and video conferencing software especially designed for corporations is obviously not for me.
The only possible solution I came across is to use MS Live Communications Server on one of the network machines (with Win 20003 Server installed) and Communicator installed on the other machines. This is also inappropriate for a home network, but at least it is feature-rich.
Is there a better solution out there?

Netmeeting seems to be a technology that hasn't been updated in about thirty years and was never incorporated properly into xp (for the same reason). None of the products from Vypress offers even a rudimentary video chat function.
Any other suggestions? Or must I install w2k3 AND sql server on a miniscule 3 machine home lan in order to be priviledged to wrestle with Live Communicator Server 05. Ridiculous!
By the way, Apple machines are 4% of the market, presumably, for that special 4% of the population. SInce I'm just an ordinary person, it's not for me.
ever see Vedos Chat 2. from Vedos software. It works not perfect but what do you want for $10.... there is a free download!

Basically just go to start --> run and type

it will take you through setup and that site also explains how to allow it access.
Other then that there are other chat clients obviously and I can help you find some if you want.
There is one from sourceforge which I will post in a while :)
