Question

Needing Assistance in Uninstalling Microsoft SQL Server

Asked by: GMartin

Hi Everyone:

Today, I attempted to uninstall Microsoft SQL Server from the Add/Remove Programs List of Windows XP Pro SP2 for a friend.  When I tried to uninstall this program, I got the following error message:  A window with the title of Microsoft SQL Server Desktop Engine.  The content of the body is as follows:  An error has occurred while removing the SQL Active Directory Helper Service.  And, the final messsage indicated when I closed this window indicated the following:  Fatal error during installation.

In closing, any help in uninstalling Microsoft SQL Server from the Add/Remove Programs List will greatly be appreciated.

      Thank you

      George

Many microsoft programs not remove correctly, specially server versions.
Try following Microsoft recomendations for manual uninstall of program -
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;320873
that link give all details.
Afterward, run regedit, and search for all occurence of SQL server in registry.
Check if related to install, then remove all registry entires after MS procedure.

Hi

With respect to the search criteria to be used, should I use the name SQL server as the search term when scanning through the registry for entries of this program?

      Thanks

      George

try the following

1) reinstall and then unistall
2) delete the folder in whihc it is installed and then use registry cleaner to clean unused registry entries

I think you should stop all the services related to SQL server through Alt+Ctrl+Del and in that go to process tab first. then Right click on all sql*.exe one by one and choose end process tree option. then try to unistall it hope it solves the problem.

Hello George
Go into services and stop the following services
1. MSSQLSERVER
2. MSSQLServerADhelper (if it is already running)
3. SQLSERVERAGENT

After stopping the services goto Control Panel/Add Remove Programs and uninstall the MS SQL
This would work.

Hi Everyone:

I unchecked every reference made to SQL Server within the Services and Startup areas of the msconfig utility and then tried to uninstall the application, but, still ran into the same problem.  Now,  I have not tried using the program mentioned within the link from the ms kb site.  Once I read the disclaimer on it which indicated that other MS programs may not work properly after using it, I was reluctant about it.  Would someone kindly advise me on whether this program can be used without problems?  If everyone thinks it is safe enough, I will go ahead and implement this strategy and see if it resolves the problem.  I am confortable with the registry tweaks mentioned which should be used after the program is executed. I do not anticipate any problems from that portion of it.  I was just uncertain about the any offsetting issues of the program mentioned within the link itself.

Any further thoughts will be appreciated.

      Thank you

       George

Hi Everyone:

I greatly appreciate the well thought out replies to this question.  Basically, this issue was resolved by the following methods:  First, I had to locate the folder containing the Microsoft SQL Server program and manually delete it.   And, finally, I removed what I believe are all references to it within the registry by using sql as my search criteria and removing the entries when noticed.  Following these procedures, I restarted the pc and checked the Add/Remove List.  I no longer noticed the program listed with the other installed programs.

Thanks again everyone for pointing me in the right direction.  Everyone's professional guidance is always appreciated and never taken for granted.

my first answer tell Mr. Martin right method -- MANUAL uninstall.
Automatic uninstall not work.  so his original assign first answer as right, that was correct.
For others reading question, automatic windows install does not work. You follow my link.
follow what I said, do manual remove of registry entries as Mr. Martin did, that is only solution.
"accepted answer" as now shown above does not work.  You try it, see that it not work, do it.

Hi scratchcyboy..

FYI, the "accepted answer" worked for him and it worked for me when I had this problem.
just have a look at the authour's comment.
