Possibly a problem with access rights - Windows was unable to write these values to their location in the registry. Are you logged in as administrator or restricted user? Which bluetooth stack are you using?

by: ReynaldoAlbertPosted on 2005-10-19 at 18:59:16ID: 15121246

Sorry I do not know what a bluetooth stack is, and how would I load these settings?

by: Andre_TertlingPosted on 2005-10-20 at 13:44:16ID: 15128328

The bluetooth stack is the piece of software controlling communication through bluetooth. Common manufacturers are Widcomm (now Broadcom), Microsoft, IVT (BlueSoleil) and some others.

However, you did not answer my question about your user account. This could be important...

How to find out which sort of bluetooth driver you are using: Go to the device manager, and have a look at the driver details there. Which manufacturer is mentioned there?

by: ReynaldoAlbertPosted on 2005-10-20 at 22:27:24ID: 15130571

Okay, I am signed on as the Administrator for XP Professional, What do I look under in Device Manager, I do not see Bliuetooth listed.

by: Andre_TertlingPosted on 2005-10-23 at 10:26:59ID: 15141814

Oh, that is a tough one. Do you have any "unknown device" entries in the device manager? If the bluetooth device does not show up, it is probably deactivated. Did you enable your wireless connections (with Fn+F2 in many cases)? On some notebooks, the BIOS will list wireless devices, if yours does, do you find Bluetooth there? And if so, in which state (enabled/disabled)?

One more thing to check, do you have a Bluetooth control applet in your Control Panel?

by: ReynaldoAlbertPosted on 2005-10-23 at 11:10:05ID: 15141961

There is a bluetooth icon in the control panel, is that t he same thing as the applet?  There is also another icon for wireless devices, but it doesn't show the bluetooth device.

by: Andre_TertlingPosted on 2005-10-23 at 11:25:09ID: 15142010

Yes, the icons in the control panel stand for applets, these are small system applications, hence the name applets. Now does your device manager list any unknown devices? Do you have your wireless connections enabled (Fn+F2 on most notebooks)?

I have been unable to close the question as no one has given me a resolution to date.

Well, you didn't answer my questions yet, so I can't give you more answers :)

My apologies, let me also explain that I have recently gone through a thryroidectomy and radioactive iodine therapy so that accounts for some of the lapses in this time I do apologize to you all as well.  Okay in my control panel there is an applet for Bluetooth and in my Device Manager I have one device which has an explanation mark next to it and it is under Network adapters:

              Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2

There are three others preceding this and they are all listed as follows:

              1394 Net Adapter
              IEEE 802.11g WLAN Card
Intel (R) PRO/100 VE Network Connection
              Microsoft Tun Miniport Adapter #2

The last one is the only one with a yellow ball and an exclamation mark next to it, I have tried to update the driver etc.. to no avail.

by: ReynaldoAlbertPosted on 2005-11-21 at 09:56:26ID: 15335649

The driver is provided by Microsoft and is a tunmp.sys when I go to the properties under this device it says "cannot start code 10"

by: Andre_TertlingPosted on 2005-11-21 at 12:48:31ID: 15337001

ReynaldoAlbert,

first of all let me send all the best wishes to you - get well again ASAP :)

The device in your device manager with the exclamation mark is the tunnel device - sort of a hub which is capable of redirecting network connection through numerous transmission means, like USB, Firewire or Bluetooth. This is only a secondary problem, arising from the bluetooth problem you are encountering. Can you please try to remove the device with the exclamation mark from the network category of the device manager and reboot?

Also, do you have a category "Unknown devices" or similar in your device manager? Somehow your bluetooth device has vanished and now we have to find out if Windows just messed up the driver configuration or if there is a hardware malfunction. The common bluetooth devices are connected via USB (even the internal ones), so you may want to try updating the USB or chipset drivers as well.

Please run the search for new hardware, maybe Windows just dropped the USB controller from its registry.

Even if it takes some time to wade through all the suggestions, please take your time to check all of them carefully.

Regards,
Andre

I hope you get well soon :)

I'm skipping this question for now...

My apologies again...but the notebook got pinched so it doesn't matter any longer.
