Can't Play DIVX and XVID Movies - Windows Media Player Hangs at 99% CPU time

The problem with trying to watch these movies is THEY MAKE THE COMPUTER HANG. The Windows Media process runs at 99 CPU and the computer is unresponsive. (Often I can hear the audio fine by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete after opening a file - but the video is screwed and won't show up). One or two films play but most make the media player (WMP or Winamp) Crash.

I used to be able to watch DivX and XVid Movies on my P3 650Mhz Win2K machine using Windows Media Player 9. I had the DivX Codec installed and the K-Kodec Lite pack. Everything WAS sweet.

I've just got a AMD64 4000+ machine with a NVidia Geforce 6200 APG card. It runs Win 2K still and Windows Media Player 9 as per usual.

First I installed the K-Kodec Lite pack and it didn't work - Then I uninstalled it and tried the Gordian Knot Codec Pack. Same problem. Then I tried AVI Codec Pack Plus. it also didn't work.

(before you ask I am absolutely certain the medium and clips I am trying to watch are perfect and complete. I HAVE A DUAL BOOTING SYSTEM and I can watch them in Linux which proves they are ok - plus I can watch them on my old machine as well). It may be worth noting that I have my screen set up with dual screen (linked to my T.V.) the aim was to watch these video clips on my Television.

Anyway - 400 points to whoever can help me solve this problem. The problem is solved when I say it's solved and "It can't be done" won't earn you the points.
