The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Internet Explorer and America Online Non-Functional

Asked by BlckBlt2 in Miscellaneous Software, Microsoft Applications

I am working on my sister's computer for her and I have hit a problem.  She and her husband have a Gateway (don't know system specs) running Windows XP that's a few years old.  They have done no maintenance whatsoever the whole time they've had it so they finally asked me to come over.  I ran a barrage of anti-spyware, malware, adware programs and ram multiple hijackthis scans as I went.  I finally got the thing clean as a whistle and the performance went up by exponential proportions.  Now, one week after I spent exactly 11 1/2 hours cleaning the thing for them, my sister tells me that America Online and Internet Explorer stopped working.  IE gives me the classic "This Page Cannot Be Loaded, Try Back Again Later" thing it gives you whenever your internet is not connected.  America Online searches for their broadband connection and then says that they may have a firewall blocking them.  Now, they have Time Warner Broadband cable modem, the connection is fine as the Network Connections window proves.  I have unloaded their McAffe Personal Firewall and turned their Windows Firewall OFF and rebooted twice to no avail.  I also made sure that both of the programs had their internet programs and IP Address and their ports as exceptions to their firewalls as well.  What else could be causing this -- I am 99% sure that this is not being caused by a virus or other malware as I am relatively proficient at cleaning and preventing these items but there's plenty of ya'll out there that are way better than me.  If anyone has any ideas what may be causing this let me know.  Also, both programs are configured to accept their broadband connections and last week after cleaning and rebooting the computer, both of those programs were working fine.  I downloaded most of the cleaning software I used off the internet.  I asked my Brother-In-Law if he changed any settings or installed any programs and he said no -- however, there's a chance he could erase the Operating System and never know what the hell he did so there's no telling.  Thanks for any help
