The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Hanging application OUTLOOK.EXE

I have a single user in a 40 user network who keeps freezing in Outlook.  The event log errors are the following:
Hanging application OUTLOOK.EXE, version 11.0.8000.0, hang module hungapp, version 0.0.0.0, hang address 0x00000000.

Network:
Server - Exchange 2003 Enterprise, Windows Server 2003
Desktop - Windows XP Professional, Outlook 2003, Office XP
Cisco 3750 switches

All servers and desktops (both OS and Office) are fully and completely patched.
SAV enterprise, as well as PEst Patrol (all latest versions with current definitions) run on the network - no infections.  .

Windows policies used, very, very locked down configuration, including "run only allowed applications"  .
All desktop hardware is identical.  All desktops run the exact same software configuration.  Other than Microsoft patches, there have been no changes to the configuration in 3 years.  All machines have the same set of patches.

A single user has been experiencing the above problem since mid February 2006.

We have done the following to troubleshoot the issue:
- run a patch cable from his machine directly to the Cisco 3750 switch that the servers are using.  Fortunately, this user is next to the server room.  The patch cable was tested with a Fluke DSP4300 and passed.  This should eliminate any network issues.
- He has used 3 separate machines (all of which are identical hardware and software).  The problem occurred on all 3 machines.  We are absolutely certain that the last machine he was given (the one he is currently using) works fine because we took it from the user most likely to complain if there was any issue at all.
- We created a new user, exported his mail (about 550mb) into a .pst and imported the mail into the new mailbox.  We only moved his favorites from his old profile and manually re-profiled his applications.  We deleted the old user and mailbox
- we put the machine on its very own APC Smart-UPS to eliminate any possible power issues
- we applied the RPC patch to both the desktop and Exchange server as mentioned in Microsoft article 908521. http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=908521&SD=tech.  This is the only patch that exists only on this user's machine and not on the others.

The issue happens, on average, 1-2 times per day. Occasionally, it won't happen for a day or two.  There are no other corresponding errors in event logs on the servers, the desktop, or the network switches.

Generally, the error comes when the user goes to send mail or use spell check.

There are no Adobe Acrobat .dot templates on the machine.
SAV does not run against Outlook on the desktops.  It only runs on the Exchange server
Outlook must use plain text for email by policy
