Question

Firefox slow down

Asked by: jkoontz33

I am a mostly a satisfied user of the Firefox browser, version 1.5.0.2... recently, and increasingly the browser moves from one web page to another VERY slowly.  This does not always happen, but as I said the incidences of slowdown are on the increase.  I have dumped the cache many times, and I use windows XP disk cleanup tool every night before shutdown.

Any ideas?

Greetings, jkoontz33 !

Firefox 1.5.0.2 works fast for me.  Maybe you have an extension slowing you down? Disable your Firefox extensions.

You may want to create a new Firefox profile

Best wishes!

Connection?

As war1 pointed out,  what extensions do you have installed?

you should remove your extensions and see if that resolves the problem

i had a problem with severe slowdowns on firefox.  it turned out to be one of the extensions.  after removing it, the problem went away

Before uninstalling take a look at http://kb.mozillazine.org/Problematic_extensions
But you could also run Firefox in IT'S Safe Mode which will disable the extensions to see if that could be the cause.

Remove FF 1.5 completely from system.  Then go into registry and remove all FF entires, reboot, and then set restore point.  If you use Mozilla you will not have this problem.  I have been using mozilla since day 1, and it has never failed to be the fastest browser ever available since the 90s when called netscape.  You can install FF 2 if you want, but mozilla has been flawless, and I recce. it above all others.

scrathcyboy-
that seems a little extreme
FF works great... the only issue i've ever had with it is a bad extension that caused browsing to slow down.  seems a lot easier to test the extensions than to wipe it completely off your system....

Your extensions are the issue...  a number of the big ones have known memory leaks (the details are complicated, but the end result of memory leaking is your computer will continue to slow down until you reboot)

this article describes this in detail:
http://tech.cybernetnews.com/2006/04/04/reducing-your-memory-usage-in-firefox/

here is most of the useful info from this article:

IE Tab 1.0.7! memory leak

Session Saver 0.2.1.031 has a known memory leak.

ForecastFox 0.8.5 also has a memory leak

Filterset.G Updater AND FlashGot used in conjunction will produce a memory leak.

FasterFox doesn’t have a memory leak specifically, but it will not help your Firefox performance. It does help your browsing performance but if you decide to keep this extension at least make sure you don’t have prefetching enabled.

Tabbrowser Extensions doesn’t have memory leaks either but will definitely slow Firefox down and it has many conflicts with other extension. It can even stop Firefox from being able to startup! A better alternative is Tab Mix or Tab Mix Plus which offer the same set of features. If you don’t need all the features of Tab Mix Plus then just use Tab Mix to lower the memory usage a little.

Please check for updates to ensure you are using the most recent version of the following extensions: Adblock 0.5.3.042, AdBlock Plus 0.6.1.1, NoScript 1.1.3.9, Search Keys 0.7.3, Thumbs 0.6.2 — each of these extensions HAD known memory leaks but they have now been fixed.

eric_campbell,

I already posted about looking at Firefox extension as a possible cause of problem.

jkoontz33,

We have not heard from you. Did any comment help you solve your problem? Do you have any more question? If an Expert helped you, please accept his/her answer above with an excellent or good grade.

Thanks, war1

war1 - yes, I saw your initial post -- I just wanted to add more info that was specific to some of the major extensions...

@jkoontz23...we've been abandoned!!!

by: mtz1of4Posted on 2006-06-11 at 06:33:00ID: 16880893

jkoontz33, by the way, clearing out your cache every night will slow down going from page to page because your browser now has to go to each page's servers to get all the info again, like jpg's of gif's, every element of the page.  When it is in your cache, the browser just has to g oto your hard drive for the info if it hasn't changed.  If you go to the same pages all the time, you are just telling your machine to work harder over the internet rather then internally.
