Question

How do I change a file association within internet explorer?

Asked by: studios

I have a SBS 2003 server running Sharepoint Jr.  When users connect to sharepoint jr. to view incoming faxes (.tiff files) appear to have become associated with Quicktime which allows you to only view the first page of multipage faxes (regardless if you save the fax elsewhere. etc.).  In addition, when you try to print these faxes, all you get is blank pages with only headers or footers on them.  Changing the .tff file association in windows explorer does not make a difference.  I have uninstalled quicktime and now I cannot view any part of the faxes (just get a red X).  This issue is happening on multiple Windows XP Professional machines.  ANy suggestions are GREATLY appreciated.  Thank you!

This is a global setting on the pc you will have to go to the following

start> settings> control panel> folder options> file types tab

highlight the tiff extension and choose change on the open with.

studios,

What did the tiffs used to open with in IE?  Whatever program it was, it had an IE plug-in that Quicktime took over (it does that all the time around here).  You need to find the ActiveX or whatever kind of installer that program came wtih to install it back into IE.

We use AlternaTiff to view and print tiffs:  http://www.alternatiff.com/

Here's some information on viewing tiff files in IE.
I view tiff files in Windows via 'Office Document Imaging' or 'Picture and Fax Viewer' ...

For IE viewing:
Here's a Microsoft posting that may help:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319829/

Here's an actual browser addin too:  (free, but requires registration)
http://www.alternatiff.com/

Also, could it possible to download the tiff to the local drive, and then open it outside of IE. (i.e. right-click on link to open tiff in IE and choose "Save Target AS..."
Good luck!

Thank you LBACIS.  The global setting you refer to does not affect the problem I am having.  That is the first thing I checked.

Thank you PCROB:  I don't recall what Quicktime replaced (I wish I did).  I will check out AlternaTiff and let you know if that helps.

Thank you OTTOBOCK:  I had the same thought about saving it locally, it does not change the problem.  I have tried associating my .tiff files with Microsoft Photo Editor as well as Picture and Fax viewer - it did not make a difference.  I will check out the articles you refered me to and see if that helps.

I will post an update once I have a chance to check out the links and the shareware suggested.  THANK YOU everyone!

I checked out the http://support.microsoft.com/kb/319829/ suggested and actually had found that prior to posting this.  I made the changes it suggested to the registry and it did not make a difference.

Iinstalled alternatiff and it worked (at least for the viewing part).  On to the printing part now....

Hi studios,

I think the tifs being created are layered tifs. The layers are the different pages of the fax. Perhaps a new print driver might help.

Cheers,
frankco
