garycase is correct, I remember from many soundblaster 16 installs on 98 that there is NO mixer control, nor L-R balance, and a lot of other features on more recent sound cards. Therefore no emulation can create it, because it doesnt exist in the hardware. Go to another sound card for mixer.

I looked through the Virtual PC docs and didn't see anything that might help with the adding a stereo mix control. I then started up a few Virtual PC's ==> XP, 2000, and WinME behaved the same as you've noted; Win98SE also had an overall recording level (mix) slider. I'm not aware of any way to force the additional controls in XP -> but just for grins I installed Cool Edit Pro in a VM, to see it would provide any additional mixing controls; but it only uses the Windows mixer (same controls you've already described). I think it's simply a function of what the drivers for the installed sound card provide; and with an old SoundBlaster 16 what you're seeing is all you get.
