Question

IE cannot launch acrobat or download pdf files

My Boss has a system running Win98 which was running fine for him until recently.
In the past any time he tried to access a pdf file it would launch adobe acrobat 6.0 and show him the file. Now what happens when the link to the pdf is double clicked on is as follows:

A "File Download" window appears asking whether or not I want to Open, Save or Cancel.

If I click on Open another window appears "Microsoft Explorer Messsage" appears with the following message: "Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found" I am then returned to the Web page after hitting OK.

If I click Save it looks like the file is being downloaded but then the same "Microsoft Explorer Messsage" appears and the download is canced I am then returned to the Web page after hitting OK.

If I try Save Target I have the same results in the paragraph above.

I have restored the default settings to origional in the advanced tab of Intert Options. Security is Medium.

It looks like IE has lost the ability to launch Acrobat Reader how can this be fixed?

Greetings, R_McCullough !

Here are some troubleshooting steps to get IE to open Acrobat Reader.

I think your problem is that is have both Acrobat and Acrobat Reader, which will cause a confict. Look at the other reasons also.  The version liste a Acrobat 4, but applies to other versions also.

If no joy, uninstall and reinstall latest version of Acrobat Reader.

well adope acrobat is a good software ............but still it is a bit heavy to load ...........try to use pdf reader a good utility which shows pdf documents and loads much faster !!!

as far as IE is concerend .........why dont u upgrade to firefox ...........since it is much faster than ie .....and have tab browsing with several plugins and themes .....to make work easier ......

http://www.mozilla.com/  (it shows pdf files in a tab so u may not be disturbed by opening pdf files in many windows ....)

Is this any pdf from anywhere, or specific file(s).

"Save Target" shouldn't invoke Acrobat at all.  Sounds more like the file can't be downloaded.
Can anyone else download this file?

The problem seems to exist when any file is accessed to be downloaded not just pdf files.

1. Disable third party extensions. With IE open, go to Tools > Internet Options > Advanced. Uncheck "Third party extensions". Click Ok. Reboot computer.

2. Clear your cache.  Go to Tools > Internet Optins > General tab.  Under Temporary Internet Files, click "Delete Files" button. Click OK.

3. Reset IE settings.  Go to Tools > Internet Options > Programs.  Click on "Reset Web Settings" button. Go to Advanced tab and click "Restore Defaults" button. Go to Security tab and move the bar to Medium or Default. Click OK. Close all browsers. Reboot the computer.

4. Check if a program running in the background is interfering with Internet Explorer. Temporarily disable all Norton programs, including anti-virus, anti-spyware, ad-blocker, win doctor, and recycle bin protect. Disable any firewall or ad-blocker.

5. Perform a repair of Internet Explorer. From Control Panel select Add/Remove Programs. Scroll down to Microsoft Internet Explorer and highlight it. Click on the Add/Remove button. When the IE Tools menu comes up, select Repair. Click OK.

6. If repairing does not work, uninstall and reinstall IE. At the same IE Tools menu, select "Restore the previous Windows configuration". Then reinstall Internet Explore.

You can also access the IE Toolbar by clicking Start > Run and type
