The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Shockwave applets randomly freeze in Firefox

Nvidia Geforce 6600GT 256mb
Windows XP Pro SP2
Internet Explorer 6.0.2900.2180
Firefox 1.5.0.6
Latest shockwave installed

I have two questions, the first being the more important one.

1. Since upgrading my motherboard and CPU two weeks ago, certain Shockwave applets keep freezeing in Firefox after a random amount of time, whereas in Internet Explorer I have no problem (I only use IE if I have to).

2. I have also noticed sluggish 2d graphics performance in Shockwave on both browsers when my display is set to 32-bit colour. When I switch to 16-bit it's a lot faster. Here are the results using a shockwave based benchmark.

16-bit colour..          32 bit colour..

Math      180.2              180.2
Text       158.6                76.0
Pixels       98.2                 70.9
Sprites   215.3                 69.9
Vector    231.6                94.3
3D         268.8               267.7
Average 192.1               125.7

All the 2D drawing tests are a lot slower in 32-bit.

Compared to the reference computers, the average of the 32-bit results only just beats the Dell Dimension 8100 (1400mhz, 256mb ram, Geforce 2 GTS), but the 16-bit average is off the chart. I know that 32-bit colour is more demanding, but that is no reason for 2D results similar to a Geforce 2 :(
