Rosco,
Thanks for posting about this. I apologize that it's taken me so long-- I must have missed my notification of a reply. Nonetheless, I followed the procedure and it does work. I just have to keep the login screen to DPE at least minimized in the system tray. It is not ideal and I'm going to have to look into something else.
One of the reasons I purchased this was it advertised being able to backup mapped drives. I didn't know it was going to be such a headache. Again thanks!

britchenn,
I mapped a drive and can see it and the files in Data Protector Express (DPE).
=====start of manual snip=====
Working with mapped drives
Data Protector Express can be configured to include or exclude mapped drives during file selection. Once
configured, these drives will appear on the Selection page of a job.
*Important bit*
***
You must use the Data Protector Express Administrator, rather than the Data Protector Express service, to
back up mapped drives because of the way that Windows implements mapped drives.
The service must be stopped for the backup of the mapped drives to work.
***
To enable or disable mapped drives
1. Open the Catalog view from the Administration desk bar.
2. In the main object detail area, select Network.
3. Select the machine whose mapped drives are being configured.
4. Select System Drivers.
5. Locate and select File System Stream and display its properties.
6. Select the Configuration page.
7. Enter a list of mapped drives in the appropriate list (e.g., JKLMQRSZX).
You can enable or disable as many drives as you need. The list does not need to be listed in
alphabetical order and Data Protector Express does not distinguish between capital and lower-cased
letters for this purpose.
=====end of manual snip=====
Once you have done this, you will see the mapped drive but none of the files *until you stop the 'Data Protector Express' service in the Windows Services snap-in.
I closed DPE, stopped the service and restarted DPE and saw the mapped drive with the files.
What effect stopping this service has on regular backups routines.. I am unsure. I guess that if the service is stopped, scheduled backups will only run if you are logged into DPE - which is not ideal.
Have to say, this is not the easiest application I have ever used. I thought it would take the hassle out of backing-up, but when I saw that the manual contained 314 pages, my heart sank - and true enough, it is difficult to use (a tree-based system does not always an intuitive app. make).
I am new to this app though, so will keep soldiering on.
