Question

Grouping distinct lines in Excel

Hi

I have a spreadsheet with three rows:

Row1: X
Row2: X
Row3: Y

I want to be able to group things so that I only have two rows:

Row1: X
Row2: Y

In other words, it would be the same as performing a DISTINCT or GROUP BY in SQL.  Does anyone know how I can do this with Excel?  Thanks.

I am not sure which version of excel you are using - for 2003:

highlight the cells to modify
make sure the cells are sorted to ensure that like values are next to each other
select Data from the menu
then select filter - advanced filter
I usually select filter in place and check the Unique records only checkbox
then click OK

You also might try the Groupd functionality in excel.

Data>>Group and Outline>>Group

To use this you have to select the second row (the second with the X) and then choose form the menu: Data>>Group and Outline>>Group

Now th second row is grouped and can be made visible by cicking on the "+"
