Question

Corrupted file after file recovery

Asked by: WolfeTone32

Having a problem with a number of files that I've recovered from a client's PC. Much of the recovered data is corrupt, but I'm attempting to recover as much as I can.
I'm attaching one file of question, which was recovered as a .wps file. Attempts to open with a Microsoft works viewer were unsuccessful.
There are 3 very important files that must be recovered.

Greetings WolfeTone32 !

Try to open the file in Open Office.  Open Office has been known to open corrupted Miscrosoft files.
http://www.openoffice.org/

If no joy, open .WPS file in a text editor like Wordpad and try to recover as much of the text as possible.

Best wishes, war1

if you open the file in NOTEPAD, what are the first few lines?

This sometimes help you determine what application created the file.

You cannot upload the file to OpenOffice or to Wordpad?  If you cannot open in either program, then file is beyond recovery.

war1,

Thanks for your input, but this is a pay-site, and that's why I'm posting the question here.
The files can be opened in wordpad.
Any progress?

I downloaded that software a few days ago and it doesn't do anything but take up HD space.
ardrac, if you have nothing to contribute outside of giving kudos to members, please refrain from
posting on this topic; it would be appreciated, and I'm sure you understand ;-)

It is a sad but true fact of life that some things are non-recoverable and that may be the case here. If the files are critical then my advice would be. Firstly do not tinker with the disk in any way - the more that is done to it then the less lilkly the chances of recovery. Employ the services of a repuiltable foresnic data recovery specilaist who will have the skill, tools, and specilaist hardware required to recover as much as is possible.

The software suggested allowed me to recover data from the file you uploaded, specifically 4 pictures. I thought you would have been interested in that.Hense the reason I posted.

If you downloaded the software and it did not do anything I would suggest maybe giving it another go. I did notcie when using it that it had to be installed and run under admin rights, running it under a limited user account apparently did nothing...

To those who posted responses: Thanks for the input. I mean that sincerely. This is a very frustrating and labor intensive task that I'm completely new to, hence, quite a sizeable learning-curve.
Ardrac: I didn't realize that there was an option to install the program under admin rights, which makes perfect sense. 28+ hours of trying to recover data with limited software is enough to make you bounce of the walls!
I've arrived at a convenient conclusion: The drive is partitioned for both Windows NT 4.0 and Office XP home. Essentially, I think it's...well, screwed, for lack of a better descriptive.
War1: I downloaded one of the open-office suites last night. Although it did get a couple of things up and running, I am unable to recover the CRITICAL files that I need.
Apologies to all if I came off dismissive or rude - it's just been a really rough go at this point, and no offense was intended. Perhaps a bit of typing and submitting prior to thinking.
My apologies,

Steve
