Question

Recovering Lost Exchange 2003 License Key Codes

Asked by: vtgtn

I am the middle of a complete mail server rebuild - Server 2003 with Exchange 2003 on a Dell Poweredge server.  I have reformatted and reinstalled the OS but now need to re-install Exchange and have determined that my client does not have a record the Exchange product key codes.  My network tech screwed up and reloaded the server without first trying to recover the keys from the existing install.

Does anyone know how I can go about recovering the key codes?  Call Dell?  Call Microsoft?  We have the media just not the key codes.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Who provided the software and what support do you have from them?

If Dell they should simply give them to you over the phone if you have your contract details handy.  If M$ and you have SA they should reissue valid codes but it will be more hassle.

You're not the first to rebuild without making a note of the codes it won't take much explanation :)

you can call the media supplier or local license partner and they will ask you about the purchase date/order and will supply you with the key

I expect that there are no key codes.

Dell Windows 2003 media will not ask for a code, and depending on the Exchange 2003 disk they gave you, it will likely not ask for a code either.

if you are subscribed to TechNet, the server CD's generally don't require the key codes but then i could be wrong.  at least in our case, we just install the software and we are billed yearly from our reseller on number of licenses used/installed during the year.

Off topic, I would be checking your license status with Microsoft kaushal2004 - the Technet products are not legally usable for that reason, and are not the VLK versions.

I may be wrong, and I hope I am, but I have seen places do this before and the customer ends up paying for software that they are not licensed for.  Sure, you can win it in court if you have invoices proving you paid for it, but who needs that headache.

just my two cents but i do hope that "vtqtn" is able to find the solution

Are you sure that the Exchange version is retail?
The Volume versions do not need keys - it is only the retail version that needs a key.

Simon.

Thanks to you all for the suggestions.  We actually ended up locating the client's MS eOpen account information and were able to retrieve the information we needed.  Thanks again.
