The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

UPS Worldship GetHostIP.exe crash causes DNS error 53670

Asked by aconway in Miscellaneous Software, Windows XP Operating System, Network Software Firewalls

I've been dealing with this error message off and on for the past 1.5 years and 3 versions of the UPS Worldship Software (7.x, 8.x and 9.x).

I've had it installed on 4 different machines (XP Pro) and EVERY single one eventually develops this error after a few months -- it works flawlessly for a like 2-4 months, then breaks and generates a Windwos Crash error for GetHostIp.exe when it tries to start communicating with UPS when you load into the software.

If I totally uninstall, delete and reinstall the software, it fixes it!..  but then it eventually falls back into this error and I have to repeat the process.  Their software is so bloated, it takes forever to install too.

The UPS techs are pretty inept and always start off with "allow these 5 EXE's and ports blah blah", well I don't think that's the issue.  There is no personal firewall on any of these workstations and our network firewall allows everything out that originates from the LAN by default (and UPS doesn't seem to understand this concept).

To me, it seems like very poorly coded and buggy software.  As I said, it works fine for about 3 months, then the software starts crashing with the GetHostIP.exe error out of no where.  I am the LAN admin and I don't make any changes to our firewall, network or workstations that would initiate this problem.

I have read that I should create a firewall (Sonicwall Pro, Enhanced) rule to allow 152.something.x.x (I have it written down somewhere), basically the UPS Network.. I am willing to try that, but I don't foresee that being the resolution to this issue, as our firewall lets everything out that originates from the LAN int he first place.

Thoughts -- from a REAL tech perspective?  PLEEASE!  I am really wanting to find what I could be missing (I know a lot, but not everything!)..  and what is the actual CAUSE of this inevitable crash.
