Question

When XP starts up windows installer attempts to install PSPrinters08.

Asked by: BillyHigdon

When starting windows on a laptop, I get a windows installer box that is attempting to install PSPrinters08.  Upon hitting cancel this install pops up about 8 or 9 more times.  I then receive an error saying "Error 1706, No valid source could be found"  I have never seen this before and am very confused over it.  Any help would be appreciated.

Hi BillyHigdon,
Check your 'Control Panel' --> 'Scheduled Tasks' and see if there is something in there about this install.
If so, you can just delete it.

Uninstall any application related to HP Printing.
If that doesn't do the trick,
you can DL the Windows Installer Clean up utility.

Hi... try this

Go to ADD/REMOVE Programs and Remove "HP deskjet printer preload"

That will solve it

Good luck

I would be careful about uninstalling 'any' HP application - there may be existing HP apps/printers that are properly installed.

If this is a network environment, an Administrator may have added a networked printer somewhere and forgot to tell anyone (never happen, right?).

If this is stand-alone, the "Plug & Play" function of XP will attempt to automatically install any printer that has been connected - and HP's will very often burp when you try to do that (great printers, but the install process can wear you out).

I tried to remove the HP deskjet printer preload already and that didn't seem to work.  The laptop is not on a network, but we do use one printer for about 4 laptops.  What we do is install the drivers on each laptop, and when they need to print they connect to the printer via USB.  When they arn't printing it isn't connected.

Billy,
Did you load the "Drivers ONLY" - or did you load the whole HP Solution Center application?
Vic

I can't really remember too well.  I think i probably just loaded the drivers only.

No clues to this activity in your Event Viewer logs?

It could simply be that the printer drivers are not being recognized for some reason.

If the printer is still showing up in your Printers screen, you can try deleting it and using the wizard to re-add it (quick method).

If it is just one box, I would probably then try what Brugh already suggested - remove everything to do with HP, clean out your registry with the "Issues" function in CCleaner (www.ccleaner.com) (freeware), and start over again with a fresh install.

Hey Billy,
Thank you for closing this out - but would you identify which of my suggestions in that post worked?
When appropriate you can 'split points' among multiple Experts to recognize more than one solution.

Thanks again,
