Question

MSN contacts unable to see me online. Account active, able to chat however

Asked by: timsnow

Hi all.

I have recently encountered a problem where my MSN Live Messenger (7.x or 8.5) can sign online but my contacts cannot see me online. I have tested on multiple PC's and multiple versions (included Trillian). I have emailed MS support and they advised to export my contact list, delete all contacts and then re-add. I have done so but the problem still persists.

This happened 2 days ago and I haven't been able to solve it yet.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Tim

How long were you using Messenger before the problem showed up?

What, if any, changes have you had to your system recently?

by: itsmeinPosted on 2008-03-11 at 23:37:24ID: 21103533

download the latest version of messenger and install it over existing installation.

I've had the same MSN for 5 years.  This problem exists on multiple machines, including the MSN web messenger.  I haven't done anything to my account lately, nor have I blocked anyone or messed with any settings.

So, to sum it up.
Single ID
multiple PC's, multiple versions including web messenger.

Thank you for your response rgn2121, much appreciated.

Are the people that can't see that you are online using the same version of Messenger.  I know that my wife uses the Windows Live Messenger 8.x and she isn't seen as online by users that have an older version.

I am not sure how much older, I just know it isn't the same version as hers...

by: timsnowPosted on 2008-03-11 at 23:50:16ID: 21103588

I've tried using an older version (7.1) and the web messenger but the problem is still the same.

I'm thinking it must be a problem with my account, as it's the same issues everywhere. I've scoured the net and found a few similar issues but haven't seen a sure fix for it. I'm contacting microsoft to see if there is something wrong with my account. I was also looking for web based tools that I can use (found one on MSNgeeks.com) that says it restores corrupt databases but it didn't appear to do anything.

Pulling out my hair here :|

Yeah...I know how that goes.  Like I said, the only time I have seen this my wife had the newest version out and the people that couldn't see her downloaded the same version she had.  Once they had the new version it was fine.

Let me suggest that if you don't get an answer here and Microsoft is able to fix it, that you return and post the out come so that others can benefit from it.

Good luck...

Yes, of course I will.  I've done all the Microsoft has advised (export/delete/import) but that hasn't solved the problem.  My guess (strictly that) is the issue lies with my account within their database.   I've got a saved copy of all of my contacts, so I've okay if they wipe my account, I just don't want to loose this particular MSN account as I have had it for so long.

If anyone has any suggestions, please advise.  Thank you!

If anyone has any suggestions at all, i'd be glad to try them.

Many thanks!

Have you changed your Email address recently that is tied to your account?

by: rgn2121Posted on 2008-03-14 at 23:31:25ID: 21131641

Is this on a home pc or work?

by: timsnowPosted on 2008-03-16 at 01:48:56ID: 21136165

I haven't changed my email account that is tied to my acount. I also haven't changed the password either.
It's a home PC,  but actually 3 different PC's (XP, win2k3 Server and another XP machine)  I have also tried the web messenger but same symptoms.

I'm pulling out my hair here, and I've spoken to 4 different Microsoft helpdesk staff and they are all asking similar questions.

Does anyone know of a MS service whereby I can pay to have my account fixed?

by: rgn2121Posted on 2008-03-16 at 12:57:59ID: 21138219

Have you tried a pc other than your home pc's?  Could it be a firewall  or router?  What security software are you running?

by: timsnowPosted on 2008-03-16 at 20:15:46ID: 21139637

I haven't tried other PC's than my home, but I can connect through work (VPN) and still have the same issue.

That being said, I did create another account and added the two accounts to see eachother. The old account (the one with the problem) can see the new one online, but the new one cannot see the old one online (same problem as above)

I believe I have exhausted all possible steps and am still trying to work with Microsoft but it's quite difficult as their helpdesk staff changes with each email.

Is there a pay service anywhere for Microsoft? Maybe that is the way to go?

by: rgn2121Posted on 2008-03-17 at 14:22:57ID: 21146300

Is it possible that you installed the older Messenger, then updated or added some security software, then added the new Messenger?

You may be right, but I would still like to see the results on pc's away from your house with the old account...

Microsoft has fixed the problem. They advised me that it affected many people globally. I had did nothing on my end to resolve the problem.
