Changing "Files of Type:" Default When Opening a File

Zones: Miscellaneous Software, Microsoft Office Suite, Open Source Programming
When opening a file in Excel (or in Word or other applications), is there a way to change the default "files of type:" from All Files (*.*) to All Microsoft Excel Files (*.xl;*.xls...)?
I would appreciate any help.
