Writing own OCR software

Hi... i would like to develop my own OCR for my Native language.... i have decided to do stroke based feature extraction... first of alll segmentation is not easy for the script since typography is difficult and characters are of different sizes and appear as subscripts or superscripts of base character....
can u suggest me a good start .. is there any open source ocr code related to above technique that i can change and enhance further .....?
