Question

Hauppauge WinTV v7 "Show Captions" Dilemma

Asked by: JeremySBrown

Hi Expert(s)

I have a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250 card installed in my computer. I installed the Hauppauge WinTV v7 software. I am able to watch and record TV just fine. Here's my dilemma, I have "Show Captions" enabled but no closed captioning or "words" are being shown when I'm watching TV. How can I have closed captioning or "words" shown when I'm watching TV? Is there a way when I record TV, I can have closed captioning or "words" integrated in the video?

Thanks!

Closed captions are only available with programs on the TV that list them as available.
Here's a lits of good questions asked about closed captions and our ABC here in Australia

extract
TV captions are called closed captions because they only become visible with the use of teletext. The easiest way to get captions on your television is through the use of a teletext television or a digital set-top box.

Hi Merete,

Thank you for your response.

<Closed captions are only available with programs on the TV that list them as available>

Your saying that only certain channels support closed captioning? If so, our NBC in the USA, I'm pretty sure that our channel or station supports closed captioning. I also tried different channels as well and still, no closed captioning are being shown. I do have "Show Captions" enabled in WinTV v7, your saying that I'll would still need a teletext television or a digital set-top box?

Thanks Merete!

Hi Jeremy refs to>>your saying that I'll would still need a teletext television or a digital set-top box?<<  my response is yes as far as I know.
also look in your TV guide  to check for
Closed captioning iwhich is usually denoted by "CC" or a small television icon beside the listing.
not all channels have it all the time.
Once you find a channel that is providing CC then test if your TV supports it.
http://www2.turnto10.com/jar/online/site_information/closed_captioning/

Also HDTV is now falling into problems as  it's more complicated to get closed captioning on the newest digital TVs that get their signal through cable and satellite boxes rather than antennas.
As the signal is being processed by the box  the caption settings must be matched to the resolution of the TV display.
Try a little googling on this topic for your country as I'm in Australia and my results are more Australian.
you'll soon see many folks are asking about it.

Hi Merete,

I have figured out how to "show closed captioning" in the WinTV v7 Software. This is what I had to do to make the close captioning work. The version of WinTV Software I orginally had installed didn't support CC. I had to uninstall the WinTV v7 software and download the updated version from Hauppauge's website.

I first had to download and run the Hcwclear uninstall utility.

http://hauppauge.lightpath.net/software/utils/hcwclear.exe

I had to make sure before uninstalling, I had to check SEARCH ALL .INF FILES. In the picture I placed an red arrow to where to check SEARCH ALL .INF FILES.

After the uninstalling is finished, it will ask to reboot. Once the computer is done rebooting, I had to FIRST reinstall the drivers and then the software "WinTV v7".

ftp://www.hauppauge.com/Support/wintv7/wintv7_cd_1.2.exe

Once the installation is done for both, once you launch the WinTV v7 software for the first time, it should prompt you to set up your channels for scanning.

Once the scanning for channels was complete I closed the WinTV v7 software, I don't know if you should or have to, but I did, next THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT, I had to go into the registry setting and turn on CC,

:HKLM\Software\Hauppauge\TVserver\CaptureAnalogVBI) I had to set it to 1.

Once I was done in the registry, I rebooted my system, then I went into the WinTV v7 software and then right clicked on the screen to enabled CC and voila!!!! CC now WORKS.

I hope that this helps out anyone who is having problems when trying to use CC with there WinTV v7 Software.
