Question

Google Earth crashes on closing

Asked by: LRG15

Just upgraded to Google Earth 5.1.3509.4636 (beta)  (Renderer DirectX 9) on desktop and laptop.   Prior version of Google Earth(4.?) worked fine.  New version works fine until close down program, when I get a windows message that Google Earth stopped working and must be closed down.  While this does not appear to affect the working of the program, it is an annoying glitch (and my "reliability index" in administrative tools suffers greatly).

Same error on Desktop and laptop, both running , Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 2).  Desktop using NVIDIA GeForce 9600GT with up-to-date drivers and Intel Core2Quad Q9450 with 4GB DDR2 RAM.  Laptop is Toshiba Satellite with a dedicated graphics card ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 (1GB) with up-to-date drivers and Intel Core2Duo P7359 2.0 Ghz CPU, 4GB DDR2 RAM.

Would greatly appreciate knowing if anyone else has this glitch - and if there is a fix.  Posting in Google Earth Forum has not yet received any response.

desktop just did it again - so error appears to be intermittent on desktop, but just about every time close out of Google Earth on laptop.

by: jackiemanPosted on 2009-11-03 at 18:57:09ID: 25736026

Take a trial-error-approach. Beta software needs testing.

I assume Google Earth has a crash on the display driver of your Vista.

From a thread in a IT forum, it says that:-

"GE creates two additional shortcuts to control the rendering mode.

Start in OpenGL mode (googleearth.exe" -setOGL)
Start in DirectX Mode (googleearth.exe" -setDX)"

Source: http://www.sevenforums.com/software/3617-google-earth-5-0-problem.html

The display card of your desktop supports OpenGL 2.1 whereas the display card of your laptop support OpenGL 2.0. (Both desktop and laptop support DirectX 10
By default, Google Earth starts in OpenGL mode. Try to start in Directx mode for both desktop and laptop and see if there is any difffernece.

Beta is still a beta and there should be error.

by: LRG15Posted on 2009-11-03 at 21:22:13ID: 25736634

jackieman,

Thanks for that.  Now I am about to demonstrate my lack of  computing expertise.

I did not even now I had upgraded to a Beta (until I went into the "about" tab).  I noticed on a news website that an Oceans exploration facility was now available in GE.  I then asked from within GoogleEarth ("check for updates on line")  if there was a upgrade and it told me to go get Ver 5.1.  Normally I am NOT adventurous and stay away from Beta versions.

As an aside, do you think that other error message I received in event log on laptop is related to this GE problem or should I post another question on that matter?

One option I have is to reinstall the earlier version of GE (assuming it is still available for download),  (Maybe I could just used system restore to a restore point from yesterday but there have been some MS updates since then and not sure if that would effectively take my back to GE 4.? anyway).

I would prefer to sort out this latest version of GE (with your assistance I hope) rather than retreat in defeat, but I am not sure how to follow your advice.  Before posting my question I did some searching around and saw in a posting on GE forum that if experiencing crashes one should try to switch renderer between directX and OpenGL, but the instructions were to click on GE icon and chose "open in .....", and when I right click on the icon OR go dirdctly to the *exe file I get no option to "open in ...".

Please advise how to:  Start in OpenGL mode (googleearth.exe" -setOGL) or Start in DirectX Mode (googleearth.exe" -setDX)"

Are you suggesting I use a command prompt or run command of some sort?

Thanks again

AHA!!!!!

I just found the check-box in tools->options->3D amd have changed it from directX to openGL.  Will test it out for a while and report back.

Do you know if there is any disadvantage to using OpenGL when the default was directX?

by: jackiemanPosted on 2009-11-03 at 22:01:44ID: 25736774

Are you running Vista Home Premium 32 bit?

I think that it is the display driver for your laptop as ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4650 is not as new as the display card for your desktop. What is the model name of your Toshiba laptop.

http://support.amd.com/us/psearch/Pages/psearch.aspx?type=2.4.2&product=2.4.2.3.30&contentType=KB+Article&ostype=Select+an+Operating+System+(OS)+type&keywords=&items=20

No idea. DirectX is OK for most computer with integrated display card and OpenGL is an open source standard which is used by many display card vendor. So, no definite answer is available.

Maybe the URL below have your answer.

by: jackiemanPosted on 2009-11-03 at 22:05:24ID: 25736794

Besides, you need to check the configuration of your display card in the control panel. But, you must take a trial-and-error approach as there are many configurable options inside.

Hope that you can get rid of the error msg soon.

by: LRG15Posted on 2009-11-03 at 22:23:11ID: 25736879

jackieman,

I have been to the AMD/ATI site, the Toshiba support site,  and the GoogleEarth forum, and have seen the information you mention.  According to windows device manager "update drivers", I have the latest applicable graphics drivers for both desktop and laptop.  Going to AMD and NVIDIA sites there appear to be later dated drivers (not clear if Betas or not), but not sure if wise to update contra to  windows update advice.

I changed the rendering agent from DirectX to OpenGL, but the problem persists.

Found a posting in GE forums of someone running XP SP3 and having a similar problem. - when closes down GE it does not close down all the way and processes in Task Manager show GE still using up substantial resources.   I checked Task Manager before I let windows close down GE and found the same thing - GE still using substantial resources even though I have attempted to exit the program.  There are no responses or solutions on GE forum yet to this issue.

I will wait a day or so, and if no solution comes up I will probably retreat to earlier version of GE, rather than messing around with settings on graphics cards or downloading other versions of drivers for graphics cards.

Thanks again for your assistance but it is beginning to look like this question is not going to be resolved.

by: jackiemanPosted on 2009-11-03 at 23:19:33ID: 25737116

If display card is not the source of problem, as you mention that you have previous version of Google Earth, it might be possible that your installation has different versions of the files which make confusion to the system when you try to close GE.

My suggestion is that you follow the accepted solution for the question below so as to remove GE totally and install it again. It may work.

jackieman

Logical approach in your last post - though I checked and only one installation.

I found an earlier version of Google Earth on FileHippo (last released version, not a Beta - and still more up-to-date than my original version) and downloaded it over the top of the Beta version on my laptop.  That uninstalled the Beta and put on a version that works with no problems.  Then I did the same for desktop and no problems.

The real source of this hassle was the Google updater advising that there was a later version and then leading me to a Beta version.  In fact there was a later released version than the version I started with, but Google updater took me to the Beta instead of the last release.

Since one of your prior responses pointed out the dangers of Beta versions, and it turns out that was the problem, I am going to select that as the solution and award the points.

Thanks for your help.
