I've read and attempted Pinnacle's proposed solution listed in their KB, but it didn't work. In addition to not being able to open the generated AVI file (in Studio or WMP), clips captured in other formats such as MPEG display a bunch of garbage in the player, either A/V static or what appears to be an incomplete still image.
Among my futile attempts to resolve the problem(s), I've reinstalled DirectX 9. I've also done some extensive digging and it doesn't appear my problem is very common. Hoping someone has a solution. Thanks!

Q2: Firewire is connected from camcorder to PC via the AV/DV2 card that shipped with Pinnacle AV/DV Studio.
The port is fine since I can see the video on the PC when it is connected. The problem comes only after capturing is complete, that I can't open the file or the files seem to be corrupt.
I can't open it in anything else, including WMP. I did manage to capture to an MPG file, which appears to work fine now. The question, I suppose, is why can I not open the AVI file (in Pinnacle or anything else) generated when I capture at full DV resolution?
All drivers are the most recent available on each of the device web sites.
Could you be missing the codec for it? That would be confusing, since it obviously encoded it. Check the file with GSpot, just to be sure: http://www.afterdawn.com/s
It gives the path and size information under the File heading, and then under the container heading it says:
File type: Unknown
Mime Type: Unknown
That's all the information it provides. I opened one of the other MPG files and saw all of the information it should be displaying, so does that mean the file is corrupt or the codec to read it is missing or corrupt?
I think the file is corrupt. Can you try another capture program to test this out? I think you can look at www.dvdrhelp.com for software. If you get a readable file this way, then the Pinnacle Studio program is somehow producing corrupt files.
I have two hard drives: A 40GB (C) for OS and apps (including Studio) and a 200GB (D) for storage (mostly captured video). I was capturing to D, but I changed it to C today and was able to open the file with no problems. Why it matters what hard drive I capture to, I have no idea.
Thanks for your help. Your suggestions assisted me greatly in tracking down the source of the problem. Now if I can just get Pinnacle to recognize this a problem and fix it... :-)

It appears this problem is NOT related to Pinnacle software or hardware, but rather my hard drive or the way it's configured.

Have you tried uninstalling and reinstalling Pinnacle Studio? How is the Firewire connected to the PC? The problem could also be in the Firewire port in the camera - try it on another machine.
