video editing software, for common media

Currently, I'm using Pinnacle 9.0. But it does not allow editing of avi and wmv files. Any software out there that allows it?

And, seem strange, but although my videos may not recorded properly, WMM in winXP is able to detect the scenes well, without any lag in frames. But Pinnacles has audio lag... by quite an amount.

Anyone has any to recommend?

I've tried using WMM to edit my videos, but the output frame is pretty small. Does not show much resolution. I'm still depending on Pinnacles to capture video screenshots.
