Question

Multimedia audio controller driver

Asked by: denverbronx

I have reformatted a friends Dell 4600 and installed Windows 2000 professional.  I reinstalled software and drivers for Win2K.  This unit has a Creative Labs Live! audio card.  Device manager has audio card working fine, however, Multimedia audio controller has yellow flag next to it and is listed under "Other devices"  I cannot install this Multimedia audio controller because the original system was XP and I have reformatted and installed Win2K. I have perused Dell's website and every stinkin; Dell disk and have not been able to find this driver.  Everything on this unit is working except the audio from CD's and DVD's.  The system audio and Internet audio works fine.  Help!

at www.creative.com there's windows 2000 drivers and utilities for a "creative labs soundblaster live 5.1 digital (dell)".

or

this link will take you to dell's download of the driver

I have the original Creative Labs Live! driver and it is installed correctly.  The multimedia audio controller has to be something related to MB integrated audio I assume.  I am perplexed to say the least.  The sytem sound and audio from internet appear to work fine thru this card but I still cannot get CD and DVD audio to work.

try removing the item with the yellow bang in front of it from device manager, and then scan for new hardware changes. it should find the 'driver' for it.. i've seen that happen before when installing live drivers.

did you get the driver off the original blue dell cd or one of my links? or did you download a different live driver. the dell cards are a bit different than the retail or regular oem cards (thus the specific dell driver on creative's site).

and, if there isn't a dpn (dell part number) on the card itself, it may be an aftermarket card, and the dell driver may not work right on it. then you'd need the regular driver instead.

The driver I used for SB Live board is the original driver that came with unit.  Please understand I have removed the "Multimedia audio controller" a dozen times and have scanned every stinkin' disc that Dell shipped with unit and have not found the correct driver for this device.

get belarc home advisor or everest home edition  ( run either one of them or both if you want to try them both out ) and they should tell you all the info you need with regards to your hardware :

Belarc :

http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html

Everest :

http://www.lavalys.com/products/download.php?pid=1&lang=en

From there you will be able to establish exactly what hardware you have and then be able to search for the correct driver on google, if you post back hardware it is that belarc or everest reports you have back here or the hardware you want the drivers for I can help you find the drivers :)

a few other thoughts....

if you do have on-board audio, the on-board audio controller might be ENABLED, and the multimedia controller you see in device manager is it, and NOT the sound blaster card. you can either a) just disable that device in device manager or b) look in the bios to see if there's a way to turn it off. if, during your reinstallation routine, you reset the bios to factory defaults, you might have turned it back on.

using an analog cd audio cable from the cd rom drive to the sound blaster card's cd input would work for the cd audio.

check the mixer (dbl click the speaker tray icon) and ensure nothing in playback is muted or turned way down.

how many 'creative ______' entries do you have in the device manager? and what are their names?

I disabled the Legacy sound in bios and the Multimedia audo controller went away.  But I still do not have audio from CD rom or DVD.  Not sure that DVD works as a player anyway.  Plugged in a DVD and it never auto started.  I did however run a analog cable from the CD rom and the sound worked fine.  I am just puzzled as to why it won't work thru the the digital cable that is already hooked up.  I guess I have solve this problem but still would like to know why in the heck this computer has problems thru the digital hookup.
