The Philips DVD only has Audio Left & Right RCA Jacks and seems to do Dolby Decoding when fed from these, as I get good sound from my Sky Box when its plugged directly into these.

I am building myself a multimedia PC. I'v got an NVIDIA 7800 GTX with VIVO an ASUS Motherboard with the nForce4 Chipset with 5.1 or 7.1 out. NVIDIA Paltinum DVD Decoder software.
Got it all installed but then I started to discover a problem, I wanted to use my exisitng speakers from my Philips 5.1 DVD player which are good quality, but I couldn't find an external 6 channel amplifier that would allow me to use the Motherboards 5.1 ouput. So I thought instead of using the 5.1 output I would simply continue to use the DVD Player/Decoder to do the decoding. So I connected the Line Out to the Audio in on the DVD Player.
I ran a test using a Dolby Test VOB. Firstly I copied the VOB to a CD and put it in my Philips DVD player and got distinct output from all 6 speakers.
I then played the VOB on the PC and am getting both Front and Rear Left playing at the same time, Fornt & rear right playing at the same time, and center & subwoofer comes from all 6 speakers. But I'm not sure if its because the VOB is being read wrongly on the computer.
My first question is how do I make the output send unchanged audio data from the PC DVD to the external decoder.
My second question is I have hooked up my Sky Set Top Box to the Audio In of the motherboard. Again how can I be sure that unadulterated audio is getting fed though to the Line Out to be decoded by the external receiver?
Sorry if it seems a bit long winded, but to make matters worse I also tried a SB Live 24 card but had similar problems
thanks in advance

Your player's input AUX is analog stereo and can emulate Dolby Prologic II, as written in the user manual.
You cannot use the player as dts or ac3 decoder for external sources, because there is no digital input (SPDIF or other).
The only way to obtain 5.1/7.1 output from the computer is to connect the speakers directly to the computer's output (or using an amplifier), if possible (the option must be studied).
crissand, thanks for your help so far, but please assume I am a complete novice when it comes to Dolby.
If I understand you right, If I play a DVD in my player then this can decode Dolby Digital etc from the DVD, but anything plugged in to the aux on has fake Dolby?
If this is right then I'll have to look at buying an Amp.
Ok been doing a little more reading,
So Dolby Pro Logic derived from 2 channels whereas Dolby Digital is 6 distinct channels
Question, Satellite broadcasts from Sky do they use Dolby Pro Logic and if so, if I'm feeding this into my sound cards audio input, how do I make sure it gets fed straight back out again as the audio in of the philips decoder will decode pro logic?
Can the DVD decoder change Digital to Pro Logic, not ideal I know but will get me though until I can afford an external SPDIF decoder.
I can only think of one other way to use the excellent speakers that come with the philips and thats to drive them directly from the computer. I did buy a 5.1 subwoofer speaker setup that would plug straight in but was very disappointed with the sound quality.
Ok, I understand. The player has AC3 and DTS multichannel (5.1) decoders but only for DVD's played with it. It doesn't provide decoding of external AC3 or DTS streams as you corectly understand.
Dolby Prologic II called "Dolby Prologic Virtual Speaker", which is available for the AUX input, it's an alghorytm to enhance the sound to sorround using just 2 speakers.

Thanks for your help, I think I understand now, it really comes down to having to buy an external decoder as even if I used the soundcards 5.1 output with the speakers connected to the soundcard, I would get full digital 5.1 when playing DVDs on the PC but it wouldn't decode the Dolby Surround that is coming from the Sky Box.
thanks for your help

1. Have you configured the sound board to use 5.1 output? If Windows XP then Start/Control Panel/Sound and audio devices/Speaker Settings/Advanced and choose the spekers configuration. I don't think the Philips DVD has 5.1 audio input, but if it has is like this:
1.1.If the input is digital you must configure the audio board, if possible, to use digital output.
1.2.If the input is analog it must have 3 jack or 6 RCA audio inputs. If is just one (analog), the input is just stereo.
