Windows Media player and swf files

When attempting to run a swf file in Windows Media Player I receive this message, security alert "your current security settings do not allow this action".

I have Windows media player 11.

Hi hawk2109,

Tools >> Options >> Security tab in Windows Media Player
Check your level is set to "Medium"

Alternatively, I would recommend using different software to play the flash files:

Swiff Player:

Swiff Player is a free standalone Flash player, that allow you to view .SWF files
www.snapfiles.com/get/swiffplayer.html

Thanks for the reply. The security settings are set to medium and we need to use windows media player in this instance.

Also on my personal notebook I have the same version of media player and it works successfully on mine.

Oh, ok.

Sounds like you just need to install Macromedia Flash then.
This will allow you to play files with .swf extension in Windows Media Player.

http://www.adobe.com/shockwave/download/index.cgi?P1_Prod_Version=ShockwaveFlash

You will have this installed on your personal notebook which is why it will work.

You must run swf files with Flash player. Not with WMP.

According to the Microsoft knowledgebase you can play .swf files in Windows Media Player:
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/knowledgecenter/mediaadvice/0071.mspx

Like I say you just need to install Macromedia Flash Player.

Thank you all for your responses, the resolution was to enable "allow web pages to use restricted protocol for active content." in the settings for local intranet in IE.
