DIVX and mp4 codecs

I need help please cutting up AVI files and mp4 files. I'm downloading 90 mb video files on a regular basis, and they are either in avi or mp4 format (most are in mp4). I want to save just pieces of these files for future viewing. (The files are 30 minute comedy shows. Much of these shows I don't find very funny, so I'd like to just cut out the best parts of each show, and only save those parts.)

I found three programs that cut avi files, but have yet to find any that do mp4 files. The programs I found are:

Easy video splitter
Advanced xvideo converter
AVI/MPEG/RM/WMV Splitter

All three couldn't read any of my avi files, even though two other programs I use - Media Player Classic and DIVX Player - can open and play all of these AVI files. I tried uninstalling and then reinstalling the DIVX codec, to no avail.

What should I do to get these programs to work? (I wrote to their tech support and am awaiting a reply).

Also, does anyone know of a program that will either convert mp4 files to avi, so I can use one of these programs once I get them to work, or that will cut up mp4 files?

BTW, I'm running windows 98SE. (And for this, it's not worth my time to go to XP, so please don't bother suggesting that)
