I'm looking for direction to which program to download/purchase for DVD playback with and emphasis on audio output. I'm not focusing on watching movies so much as getting best audio playback of concert-based DVDs. I have a digital (coax) connection going out to my home theater amp.
Given that, it's not clear to me exactly what combination of codec and app support i need to playback DVDs. I'm prepared to pay for this...but i don't want to waste money either.

Power DVD is my choice as I have the same setup to my stereo home theater from my pc.

Your sound card is the key here as well with the right sound card

I'm working off my MOBO's RealTek HD device. Since I'm sending digital out to a HT amp exactly what role _does the sound card play? It's not doing any amplification, right? Nor any encoding.
Seems like output to HT takes the sound card's features and capabilities out of play - in a sense it serves nothing more than a cable connector from the sound source to the HT amp where the real work is done.
BTW, I ended up acquiring a Pioneer Elete vsx-52TX with the auto calibrating circuit. It's _way more amp than needed for what i'm doing ...in fact, the thing sits there on the shelf utterly disdainful of how I under-utilize it but i get a great deal used via EBay.

HI steve,
I'd recommand you just acemegacodec for a series of codecs, but if you want you can use only media player with pluggins addons, that will give you high quality sound output.
try: AC3 Filter from:

and windows media player equalizer
if not satisfied, try media player classic, but I think WMplayer 11 is better.
