How do I change fonts and font sizes in .srt files?

Some subtitles look really huge on screen when video files are played in a media player with the srt file that comes with it. Can I modify the font settings of the srt file?

.srt does not support font properties, .smi does.
But almost all players have settings for subtitle font size.
What player do you use? Usually it's something like: player - subtitles - subtitle properties - font.

This may vary, depends on what player you use.

What application uses the .smi file extension? Do most video players recognize the file?

I use a Western Digital HD Media Player to which I hook up a 500 GB external hard drive containing my video files and .srt files. Unfortunately the media player doesn't have a font setting.

I checked the specs and it only supports UTF8 .srt files. But I really doubt that it doesn't have the option to change it, I'm downloading a manual now, and try to look it up.

New version of firmware has subtitles font size support.

I've just upgraded the firmware. But there's still no control of font settings. I have .srt and .sub files along with my video clips. But then the release notes say it's added .smi recognition...

So if I change the .srt extensions to .smi, will I be able to edit the contents of the file with Notepad in order to change font settings? Or does .smi have a dedicated application for it?

I think you need to look a little deeper, because I quote the release notes for Version 1.01.01 says
"" Added user selectable font size for subtitle support".

But you can also convert to .smi files but that does not guarantee that device can re-render them to smaller size. Anyway here's a guide how to do it: http://forum.videohelp.com/topic219201.html
