I have been using the combination of DVD Decrypter and Handbrake 0.9.3 to convert some of my DVDs to MP4 files for viewing on my Nokia N810 handheld.
Firstly, I rip the DVD to the hard drive in IFO mode using DVD Decrypter. This creates an single VOB file that, secondly, I feed into Handbrake. In Handbrake, I select "PSP" as the output mode, and change the file type from M4V to MP4.
With 4:3 TV shows (e.g. South Park, Star Trek TOS), and cinema-widescreen movies (e.g. Minority Report, Total Recall), Handbrake correctly detects the aspect and outputs an MP4 file that is the correct aspect ratio.
However, with 16:9 TV shows, something goes wrong. Handbrake does NOT correctly detect the aspect - it displays the aspect as 1.33 before encoding, and when the file is converted to MP4 I get a squashed 4:3 MP4 file rather than a viewable 16:9 one.
I'm not sure whether this is because I am doing something wrong in DVD Decrypter, or whether there is a setting I need to adjust in Handbrake. Manually trying to adjust the aspect in Handbrake - that is, changing it from 368 x 208 to 423 x 208 - does not appear to work; the MP4 is still a squashed 4:3.
Can anyone help sort this out?
Thanks!
David

It sounds like the show was recorded in letterbox mode -- which will "report" a 4:3 aspect ratio to Handbrake, thus resulting in a letterboxed output.
If that's the case, you can get a true 16:9 output by first transcoding the show from letterbox to 16:9 ... and THEN doing the transcoding with Handbrake. You can change the letterboxed video to 16:9 with the free DVD Rebuilder ... available at http://dvd-rb.dvd2go.org/m
Simply
what I'd do is grab the main vob convert it to mpg
or use
the output file after DVD decrypter you can do either
drop it onto Super video converter and adjust the video scale hit encode

Glad Super does the job -- but just FYI you do NOT need a commercial codec for DVD ReBuilder ... it works just fine with the free ones that come with it. You CAN buy a commercial codec that gives "better" results ... but I've not found that necessary -- the results are very good with the HC encoder that comes with it (I always use the highest quality mode).
