Question

Windows Media Player cannot access the file?

Asked by: JeremySBrown

Hi Experts(s)

I have ran into a problem that I can't figure out what exactly happened and what's causing this.

Yesterday I was able to play videos in Windows Media Player and Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 just fine in Windows 7.

Today when I try to play video(s) in Windows Media Player I get the following error message:

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

When I try to play the same file(s) in Cyberlink PowerDVD 9, It try's to play the file(s) then it says stopped. As if Cyberlink PowerDVD 9 doesn't see the file or doesn't support it.

The file(s) "videos" are NOT in use, but I could be wrong, I rebooted, that didn't work, the file(s) "videos" are stored on my other hard drive, so I copied the file(s) "videos" to my C: Drive and that didn't work, I don't know about my proxy settings might not be correct?

If I try to play the files(s) "videos" with VLC Media Player, they play just fine.

Thanks,

Interesting, after hours of not working, it now see's the file(s) "videos" in Windows Media Player and in Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.

Could this be a glitch "bug" in Windows 7?

I tried opening a .m2ts file and it opened and played just fine in Windows Media Player, I tried the others and everything played in both Windows Media Player and in Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.

The only thing that I did, that I can remember before I tried opening the file(s) "videos" again was, I opened Sony Sound Forge 9 for music listening, and for the heck of it, I tried opening the files(s) "videos" and now they all work again.

Control Panel>Hardware and Sound>Sound and then something should pop up saying certain enhancements are interfering with something Terminate the program? Click yes and your problem should be solved

Hi lucidica-shu,

Thank you for your response.

I went to Control Panel>Hardware and Sound.

I added pictures so I can show you and to others exactly what I'm seeing.

Am I supposed to see this "pop up saying certain enhancements are interfering with something Terminate the program" in picture labeled "Sound in Windows 7"?

Should it came up automatically?

I don't see it.

JeremySBrown do you still have a problem since you commented>>:Interesting, after hours of not working, it now see's the file(s) "videos" in Windows Media Player and in Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.

Could this be a glitch "bug" in Windows 7? << no not necessarily maybe you closed the WMP using the X rather than stop the video first then close WMP
Since you have 2 media players as default and associating with DVD and videos of the same they will both attempt to run at once if and when you left click on a video.
To prevent locks or in use errors open the chosen media player first then drag and drop your video on.
otherwise remove the file association to one of the media players so only one will identify with video
cheers

Hi Merete,

Thank you for your response.

< JeremySBrown do you still have a problem since you commented>>:Interesting, after hours of not working, it now see's the file(s) "videos" in Windows Media Player and in Cyberlink PowerDVD 9.>

As of right now, no. The file(s) "videos" play fine now.

< maybe you closed the WMP using the X rather than stop the video first then close WMP>

Yes, I always use the X instead of actually stopping the video when WMP.

Could this of caused what happened earlier?

"Windows Media Player cannot access the file. The file might be in use, you might have access to the computer where the file is stored, or your proxy settings might not be correct."

<Since you have 2 media players as default and associating with DVD and videos of the same they will both attempt to run at once if and when you left click on a video.>

I'm a little bit confused on this statement, sorry, I think I know what your saying, do you mean...since I have tried to play the file "video" in one player, when I try to play the same file "video" in another media player, it fails because it thinks that it's playing in another media player?

Can you explain by what you mean "once if and when you left click on a video".

Do you mean this?

Here's a picture:

<To prevent locks or in use errors open the chosen media player first then drag and drop your video on.>

When you mean "then drag and drop your video on". Go to file, open, then select which video I want?

<otherwise remove the file association to one of the media players so only one will identify with video>

Here's another picture:

Do you mean select one media player so it will indentify just this certain video?

Merete - I don't know if you can answer my next question, I have a dual boot system with Windows XP and Windows 7. When I play the movie in Windows Media Player or in any other player in Windows XP the words in the movie are in sync.

When I play the same movie in Windows 7 with any player, the words are about, maybe one second not even, out of sync.

I do have codecs installed on both XP and 7. Is there a codec(s) that you recommend that I should install for Windows XP and 7 for HD playback so that the movie is in sync?

Thanks Merete,

Hi jeremy in refs to>>when I try to play the same file "video" in another media player, it fails because it thinks that it's playing in another media player?<< that's exactly what I meant.
WMP has so many dependancies services running it also connects to the internet and spends time looking up your lisenses and updating your libraries and that applies to all OS.
I find once a video is in WMP library it will not let me move the video even with WMP closed because it's sitting in WMP memory. Library or recently played.

Maybe the system is a little slower than our fingers on the keyboard, since you dont stop the video playback first and just close WMP it may take a while to release it's grip on the video.
I have quite a few media players on my system all with all files associtaed and I always run  VLC media player first then drag and drop my video onto it.
VLC has no dependancies and services running like WMP.
With DVD it will automatically open with Power DVD/

With refs to out of sinc I can't really say why your experiencing that possibly be an issue with how much you have added to this system and not upgraded the following hardware to support it.
ram at least 3 gig for W7, but does xp support 3 or 4 gig of ram?
PSU should be around 470 watts
your video card support how much ram is on the video card
I'd start with installing ffdshow codec. see if the fixes the sinc issue

Hope it assists you

Merete - Great information you have said! :-)

My system that I'm using to playback HD content has the following...Intel Core 2 Duo, 4GB RAM, NVIDIA 9600 GT Video Card, PSU 600. I have the up-to-date drivers too.

I did notice something after I installed ffdshow, the file(s) ARE in sync now in VLC and in PowerDVD 9 but it still looks a little out of sync in WMP.

Would you suggest that I just playback HD content in VLC and in PowerDVD 9 and forget about WMP for HD playback, or until there's some kind of fix?

I have ffdshow installed in Windows XP, but I originally forgot to install ffdshow for Windows 7, but I do now of ffdshow installed in Windows 7.

Have you experienced any problems trying to watch HD content through WMP?

The HD file that looks out of sync in WMP is a .mp4 file.

Thanks,

Indeed I have and I will not use WMP.
WMP is nice bling bling but the makers never had the customer at heart, remember WMP is owned by Microsft, mpeg is owned by motion picture experts group, and MS never had any rights to use mpeg.
In other words all OS prior to Vista, and W7 coudlnot play DVD or mpeg  natively without installing the mpeg decoder PowerDVD or a plugin for mpeg, NOT FREE
As illistrated here, Vista and W7 shoud lnot need these now
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/player/plugins.aspx

Now WMP will play DVD in Vista and W7 but only because MS bought usage rights to bundle a DVD rom with Power DVD or a form of Cinema player.
VLC programmers had the users at heart and designed a software for video no lisense required
hense VLC is an open source and supports pretty well all video formats regardless.
That said it was these wonderful programmers that freed us from being dependant on OEM PowerDVD or buying the decoder to play DVD, including Roxio cinema and the decoders that bundles with the DVD rom.
There is also Power DVD cinema not free
Actually Media player classic came out before VLC was such a big a hit
and now has Media Player Classic cinema free and open source
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Media_Player_Classic_Home_Cinema
try it.
Cheers

Merete - Thanks again for the links and your comments. :-)

This is what I had tried and done so far.

I have downloaded Media Player Classic cinema from the link you provided for me, I tried playing both a .mp4 and a .mkv file. They both play in Media Player Classic cinema but when I fast forward or rewind it it takes sometimes between 3, maybe 5 seconds for the sound to reappear again with the video, but it's in sync.

I tried to play the .mkv file in DivX player plays just fine.

When I try to play the .mp4 file in DivX player I can see the video is playing, at the bottom of the DivX player (Current Time) is moving but there's no picture and no sound. The only thing I see is a advertisement in the middle of the screen while the (Current Time) is moving instead of the video.

I also tried playing the .mp4 file in Quicktime, the (Current Time) is moving but there's no picture or sound playing.

Thanks,

Merete - Regarding to WMP cannot access the file. If this occurs again, what's the best way of fixing this problem,

I tried rebooting when this first happened and that didn't work. The only thing I did was wait, then it worked again after a few hours.

Thanks,

ok refs to>>when I fast forward or rewind it it takes sometimes between 3, maybe 5 seconds for the sound to reappear again with the video,<<<
If my knowledge serves me WMP can only rewind and fast-forward WMV files.

Remember your playing HD video, also are you pausing the video first then FF or RW.
Perform this slowly in small steps. And donot use full screen.
Even using these superior players such as VLC and MPC-  FF HD video video is not really recomended.
>>>
Would you suggest that I just playback HD content in VLC and in PowerDVD 9 and forget about WMP for HD playback << indeed I do.

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-08-30 at 21:27:09ID: 25220514

Merete - Okay...I think from now on I will play HD video using only VLC and PowerDVD 9.

I think that I through alot of questions at you at once in my last two comment(s), sorry about that.

In my last two comment(s) what do you think that might be causing this...

I tried to play the .mkv file in DivX player plays just fine.

When I try to play the .mp4 file in DivX player I can see the video is playing, at the bottom of the DivX player (Current Time) is moving but there's no picture and no sound. No probs I'm here to help.
Jeremy you'll find most problems with video playback are resolved by using a player that supports all of them the best open source is VLC
http://www.afterdawn.com/guides/archive/how_to_play_mkv.cfm
refs to>>Regarding to WMP cannot access the file. If this occurs again, what's the best way of fixing this problem<< lol if you don't use it or don't FF -RW  using it - problem gone.

Refs to>>When I try to play the .mp4 file in DivX player
Lets reiterate on that,
An MKV file is a Matroska file. Matroska is an open source container format. It is an alternative to the popular AVI and MP4
mp4 is based upon Apples QuickTime container format  MPEG-4 which is essentially identical to the MOV format, QT player will play this just fine.
however>>playing the .mp4 file in Quicktime, the (Current Time) is moving but there's no picture or sound playing.<< there's a problem with it.
To analyse a video for problem use gspot codec analyser, drop your video on and Gspot will analyse it, it reports what it is and if you the necesary codecs installed look to the bottom under proposed codecs and solutions, click on Vid 1
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/Gspot

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-08-31 at 06:07:36ID: 25222431

Merete - I used GSpot...when I select the .mp4 file for path, these are the results I get.

When I open a .mkv file in GSpot...these are the results I get.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-31 at 16:12:30ID: 25227358

Hi, I need to see what's in the left panel as well, could you just include the entire interface of gspot please.
From the little I can see in the first image you have a red line on the left not green which indicates a problem
Video-for-.mp4.jpg  and Audio-for.mp4.jpg  is this the same clip but showing the different aspects like the audio used in the mp4?
Looks like the the problem with video playback is the audio format is not recognised.
h.264 mpeg-4 avc
Since it played fine one day but then stopped working I cannot answer that why it changed.
if ffdshow did not fix it maybe a corruption in the WMP library.
Try deleting WMP library and start a new one otherwise try the drag and drop method open WMP then drag and drop the mp4 on.
Was mp4 streamed and saved?
Detele your temporary ie files

the .mkv file in DivX player plays just fine so the only problem video is the mp4 it does not play in anything right?
I'd say it's corrupted then.

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-08-31 at 17:30:48ID: 25227652

Hi Merete - Absolutely...

<Video-for-.mp4.jpg  and Audio-for.mp4.jpg  is this the same clip but showing the different aspects like the audio used in the mp4?>

Yes, it's the same clip.

<Try deleting WMP library and start a new one otherwise try the drag and drop method open WMP then drag and drop the mp4 on.>

How do I delete the WMP Libray and start a new one?

<Was mp4 streamed and saved?>

The file is originally a .m2ts file that I have on my hard drive, and I converted it to a .mp4 file and a .mkv file.

<the .mkv file in DivX player plays just fine so the only problem video is the mp4 it does not play in anything right?>

The .mp4 file only plays in WMP and VLC. Doesn't play in PowerDVD 9 or Quicktime.

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-08-31 at 17:34:00ID: 25227669

It plays in WMP but it takes between 3, 5 seconds, maybe 10 for the sound to reappear again with the video.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-31 at 19:55:51ID: 25228251

right,
The file is originally a .m2ts file<< that I have on my hard drive, and I converted it to a .mp4 file and a .mkv file.
was this off a Blueray DVD? or off a camera that supports HD<
M2TS - MPEG-2 stream (Blu-Ray) file type used in high definition
and the  .M2TS files contain a BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream and each stream has its own file and their names are of the form ?????.M2TS a five-digit number followed by .M2TS
What did you use to convert / decrypt etc this M2TS?
An M2TS converter?
Quick work around that I can think use the original .m2ts file convert it to mpeg1 or mpeg2 using Super video converter.
http://www.videohelp.com/tools/SUPER
I just checked my version and it supports .M2TS
put the output container top left to mpg then mpeg 2 o0r 1  leave everything as is unless you wish to change the video scale.

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-08-31 at 21:05:00ID: 25228459

Merete,

<was this off a Blueray DVD? or off a camera that supports HD>

Yes, It was from a Blu-ray DVD.

On the DVD there's a folder called STREAM in this folder it contains 14 .m2ts files and one of the files is about 15GB.

<An M2TS converter?>

I used a program called HDConvertToX to convert it to .mp4 and .mkv format.

I was looking at TMPGEnc 4.0 Express because it supports DivX HD1080p.

by: MeretePosted on 2009-08-31 at 22:26:57ID: 25228722

awe right,
Xilisoft HD Video Converter was designed to convert H264/AVC video
http://www.xilisoft.com/hd-video-converter.html
I have no knowledge of Blueray  and how to copy them.
It's illegal !!!
As I said .M2TS files contain a BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream and each stream has its own file and their names are of the form ?????.M2TS a five-digit number followed by .M2TS.
What is Blue-ray
http://www.blu-ray.com/info/

by: JeremySBrownPosted on 2009-09-01 at 05:20:24ID: 25230749

Merete,

Originally the files WERE off a camera that supports HD. The files were originally a .mod file, so I converted them to .m2ts format. Then I took the files of the "Blu-ray disc" I have a blu-ray burner, and copied them to my hard drive and converted them to .mp4 and .mkv format.

I went online and was reading that on blu-ray dvd's that there's a folder called STREAM and in that folder it holds .m2ts files, and one should be a lot bigger ( the example was 15GB).

Oh...I'm NOT trying to copy actual Blu-ray movies or anything like that.

I'm just confused...because I don't have (example 14 or so .m2ts files) could this be why I'm having problems?

I'm completely new with HD and Blu-ray.

Sorry for the mixup.

Thanks, Merete

<As I said .M2TS files contain a BDAV MPEG-2 transport stream and each stream has its own file and their names are of the form ?????.>

I'm a little bit confused...names are of the form?

Regarding to SUPER, it's pretty much a HD video converter that supports HD video and audio correct?

Thanks, again sorry about the mix up in ID: 25228459

Merete,

And to add, I downloaded a couple these clips from Microsoft's website.
http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windowsmedia/musicandvideo/hdvideo/contentshowcase.aspx

When I try to play these in VLC, I get the following errors:

There's no sound at all when playing in VLC.

Thanks,

Hi  jeremy,
No problems you have not broken the law, I just have to be careful as this is an open forum .
with regards to super it supports importing your m2ts and should have no problems to convert your m2ts . Not HD  Give it a try.
Choose the audio out put that is supported by your system or the default provided by Super's settings when you select the output container it fills in the rest.
Do you have ffdshow installed? Super will need that
In refs to >>GSpot-v2.70a-.mp4-format.jpg
The audio used is not supported on your system or the file you converted is using an audio format not supported by your system's audio card.

Yes I have played the HD video from that site. I used MPC. Media player Classic Cinema.
Does it play in PDVD9?
 I downloaded the 720p, not the 1080i
Do you have 5.1 stereo? As the 1080i uses 5.1 stereo surround the 720p uses 16 bit speaker bits.
Briefly explains the quality is actually better for your PC
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p
The preferred is the 720p
since you converted this video to mp4 and .mkv
.mkv  works why not stay with this format?
Or change the audio used in the conversion

Hi Merete,

With SUPER I can import .m2ts file and convert them to another format but it won't be HD quality or close to it? Even if I use .mkv x264?

<Do you have ffdshow installed?>

Yes, I have ffdshow installed.

<Does it play in PDVD9?>

the 720p plays fine in PDVD9, but 1080i will NOT play correctly. The video lags, but the audio is okay.

<Do you have 5.1 stereo?>

I'm using the onboard sound from my mobo. The mobo I have is the Abit IP35 PRO. I don't know if it has 5.1 stereo. Under my volume control properties, I'm using the Realtek HD Audio.

<since you converted this video to mp4 and .mkv

I will stay with the .mkv format since it works, I was just experimenting with other formats.

Thanks Merete.

Hi Merete,

I have to be honest, I NEVER used SUPER before so I alittle lost.

Do you have a recommendation on which settings I should use to convert this .mt2s file into a .mkv format?

As of right now I guess my computer works fine with 720p, sound, I don't know since I'm using the onboard mobo sound. So far it works fine in PowerDVD 9.

What about 1080p? Do you think that will work on my computer?

To help you out, this is the specs of my computer...

  • Abit IP35 PRO mobo
  • Hauppauge WinTV-HVR-2250
  • Intel Core 2 Duo 2.66 GHz
  • 4GB Memory (only seeing 3.25GB)
  • Windows XP Professional SP3 32-bit & Windows 7 32-bit
  • 600 PSU
  • Blu-ray Burner
  • 2 1TB Hard Drives
  • NVIDIA 9600 GT
  • I-INC iF-281DPB 28" Widescreen Active Matrix TFT Display

Can and does my computer with the specs I have named for you, support HD content?

If I can, with the specs I have named, what can and can't I do with HD content?

Does my computer have a limit?

Thanks Merete,

Hi Jeremy glad to hear it's working now.
That kind of answers of your original question. :)
With Super once you select the output container it automatically selects the recomended setings video scale audio quality
once your experienced you can tinker with the settings but Super will throw a message do you want to change them.
convert this .mt2s file into a .mkv format? << I thought you wanted to go mpg.
NVIDIA 9600 GT <<  would play them but in the end include the supported media player
I have nvidia 6600GT and using MPC  or PDVD plays HD fine.
refs to>>What about 1080p? Do you think that will work on my computer?<<, only way to know is to convert one.
refer to this to get an understanding
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1080i
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/720p
But I'd stick with the 720p it's a very nice quality.

The video scale determins the quality
The bigger the video scale the more pixels per square inch which produces a smooth effect on a full screen.
If you took a video 320 x 240 and made it full screen it would  pixelate hense why HD  and DVD are so large in size.
Other great quality video is divx and quicktime
