Question

Can't install HP Officejet J6400

Asked by: fcirillo

From the original installation CD from HP Officejet J6400, I receive the following message:
"The installler can not access the Register Key HKEY_LOCAL-MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum", when I try to install the printer in a notebook DELL 820 XP SP3. And the installation stops.
I have installed the same printer with the same CD in other Notebook, and works fine.
What to do? As this is Wifi printer, I need the CD for installation to use the printer by Wifi.

i have received this from hp support

open regedit and browse to:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum

Right click on "Enum" and select "permissions". Permissions should read as follows:

Everyone - Read
System - Full Control
Administrator - Full Control

Now click the "Advanced button" and in "Permission Entries"
In the first tab (named "Permissions") and select all three usernames (ctrl + click each). Check the box marked "Replace permission entries on all child objects..." and click OK. This should now work

Doubtful as services including print spooler would not be running. Can't hurt to try though, give it a go.

I have checked the permissions in regedit, and are OK.

It is possible that your antivirus/security suite is preventing access to the registry. Disconnect from the internet and disable it. If you cannot see how to do this, uninstall it. Try the printer install once more. Enable or reinstall your av.

Not making much sense. Possible that the registry key is damaged/corrupt. Read on at your own risk! At the risk of frying the system, so if possible take an image first for safe restoration. Create a restore point. Navigate to the registry key in question - HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Enum. Right click the key and export. Save it to the desktop where you can find it easily. Confirm it's existence. Delete the key in registry. Double click the exported file to restore. Try the install now. If the key will not successfully import use the restore point to correct it.
